Someone was kind enough to send me a newly revised version of Bruno Nettl's
The Study of Ethnomusicology
I lost the passage where he mentioned he gave a lecture in Tehran ( in the 70's) on western music
at one point and at the end he presented some electronic music
and the students raised their hand asking why it was so ugly.
they in themselves concluded that the west must be confused.

Thomas Merton came to a similar conclusion
