Oh yeah. And this is the shit that says "it ain't the tuning, it's the
music"!!! But Jay McShann could have told us that. :) No need to sit
around, ruminating over tuning matrices...

Gotta love Oscar wiping his face in the middle of his own damn solo!

Cheers,
Jon

Knowing only to expect virtuosity, I assumed that I would see a
guitar. I was pleasantly surprised, considering how much of youtube is
dedicated to closeups of shredders.

Fucking amazing!

I was enjoying it for the first 2+ minutes, but then
at 2:44 (right after he wipes the sweat of his forehead
for the first time), he just goes nuts! From there to
the end it's simply incredible.

I teach piano every day, and this is beyond anything
i've ever even imagined. Wow, now i know why people who
love Oscar think so highly of him. I'm in awe.

Then again, one wonders: if a clip of Bill Evans were posted, would
there be the same jaw-dropping reaction? So, are we reacting to
music-making, or to raw athletic ability? Are we actually connoisseurs
of a highly-developed artistic sensibility, or are we really just
brethren to the guys that paint their faces, take off their shirts in
sub-zero weather, and cheer on their gridiron heroes?

Jon

when in Rome!

But recently i had the pleasure of seeing Rzewski who do a solo piano concert where after playing 2 pieces totaling about 50 minutes took a 10 minute break came in and played his magnum opus "the people united shall never be defeated" a work normally about an hour long but when he got to the end he proceeded to improvise another 15 minutes too.he took his standing ovation of about the 30 people willing to go to this free concert sat right back down and played another 15 minutes all at the age of 68.
the next day i happen to have the opportunity to run across him a half hour before he was to give a lecture and was able to talk with him.A composer who expressed things i have not heard from anyone one else. Never did he once say one line of what one might call 'self promotion'. a bit of a difficult man too more so when he asked me what i wrote i explain my interest in different tunings and did not push it though( i was more interested in what he had to say).and i have never enjoyed his take on things so much even though we shared little or maybe even no common ground. I have the upmost respect for him and his music .

Of possible interest to those on this list he expressed the ideas that there are those things in life that do not make sense and he incorporated things in his compositions that did not make sense. In fact he expressed how much logic still influence art and that it wasn't necessary or even useful
He thought there was too much communication and that composers might be better off not knowing how or what other composers are doing.
When asked how he composed at the end of his lecture in a question and answer section he said he turns off everything goes into his studio and proceeds to lite a very big joint.

That's pretty awesome. He's got a certain focused intensity, like he's
pointing a laser at the keyboard.

Monk is my favorite jazz pianist, something about the way he treats
melodies just feels right. I like that he can sound amazing without
falling back on the horror-vacui techniques of shredders and the like.
I still wouldn't paint my face and take my shirt off in sub-zero
weather for him.

Kraig,

Oh, man, I'm so envious of you! I've never seen FR perform but I am
probably going to keep tabs on him and travel to a concert while he is
still on this Earth. Your take on the concert seems dead-on - I
actually read about it when looking at some reviews last week by Mark
Swed. If FR were involved in microtonality, people on these lists
would be tripping over their tongues!

For me, yes, but of a different sort--Bill Evans was a virtuoso in a
very different sense--especially at harmonic voicing.

I think we *are* reacting to raw athletic ability, and there's nothing
wrong with that---especially since Oscar has proved himself to be an
all around great artist, as listening to him accompany Ella or do a
ballad amply prove.

Monk is great, Oscar P. is great, B. Evans is great---there's room for
all three in my world.

Best,
Aaron.

The Bumblebee

I saw a bumblebee in a dreadful plight
It was cold, not one flower was in sight
He was hungry with no energy for any more flight
Just before he ran out of power I had an idea
I bought him a bouquet with many a flower
"My friend I surely thank thee" Said he
The very next day he came to me
And gave me a pot of the finest honey

Yeah ... it looks to me like that was his own personal cue
to *really* kick it into high gear, because it's right after
that face-wipe that he cooks his butt off!

I can say that i personally am reacting mostly to Oscar's raw
athletic ability in this clip, and there's nothing wrong with
that -- technical virtuosity *is* something that a lot of
listeners/viewers enjoy when watching a skilled performer.

But there is more to it than that ... for me, the second half
of this solo (after the face-wipe) shows Oscar demonstrating
an intellectual mastery that i find really awesome. The
counterpoint he's playing, with his hands doing totally
different things at amazing speed ... wow.

And it still sounds good too. I thought it important to
add that, because a lot of shredders play amazingly
virtuosic music that really sounds like crap.
