monz: motorcycle accident again

🔗monz <monz@...>

Hello all,

Probably a good idea to inform everyone ... i was involved in
an accident on my motorcycle on Wednesday October 4, hit by
a car pulling out of a parking spot and slammed into another
one on the other side of me, like a motorcycle sandwich.

Apparently as i went down, the motorcycle flipped over on
my right foot. Luckily, this one was on a city street rather
than the freeway, so other than the usual road-rash bruises
on knees, elbows, etc., the only serious injury i have is
small fractures and a bad sprain to my right ankle.

So i have to walk around with an old-man kind of walker,
and can't drive ... which makes getting around and doing
things a little difficult. It's still amazing to me how
difficult it is to do simple stuff like take a shower.

And if i want to eat my dinner comfortably in my room
in front my computer as i usually do, i have to go back
and forth to the kitchen to carry one item at a time,
unless a roommate is home to help me. Sometimes i actually
find humor in it ... to do my laundry today, i had to
put my dirty clothes in my backpack to carry them to the
washing machine. (Luckily we have one in the house)

Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know. I seem to be
healing up OK but it looks like it will take quite a
long time before my foot is back to normal (which
hopefully it eventually will be).

Ah yes, you're very lucky ... although not so lucky to get hit in the first place.

I didn't have a shower for over a year when I had a bad leg! Do you have a bath?

...and when my wrist was bad I carried everything around in a backpack. After a while you get used to doing everything differently. Do you have a tray to carry the food on?

Only the two that you guys know about. There were others,
on other motorcycles, in the years before i had internet access.

> - you reconsidering the bike? (not *because* of the bike,

I can appreciate that, but no, riding a moto is a part of me.
I wish the insurance process would move along a little faster
so that the adjuster can come out and inspect the bike, so
that i can get it repaired by the time i heal. ;-)

I know, you, and a lot of the rest of you (and pretty much
all the other non-bikers i know) think i'm totally nuts
... but what can i say? My car has been sitting in a
parking space getting a tan since February. I'm only ready
to use it again now because: 1) rainy season in San Diego
just began, and 2) i think my right leg will be messed up
long enough so that when i *can* drive again, i'll have
to start with the car.

... but we'll see -- i'm gonna hop back on the iron horse
and start riding again as soon as she's ready. :-)

I do, but i'm not into that. I put up with the hassle of
standing in the shower anyway. But it really is a pain
in the ass. (well, literally, it's a pain in the leg...)

> After a while you get used to doing everything

Yes, i'm already seeing that happen. It's just amazing
how such small things like carrying cooked food are such
a huge problem.

> Do you have a tray to carry the food on?

It wouldn't matter -- the problem is that i need both
hands to hold on to the walker. So when i carry food
from the kitchen to my bedroom:

* i take one item of cooked food,

* put it on the stereo speaker which is in the living-room
just outside the kitchen,

* walk as far as i can while still reaching the speaker,

* grab the item of food, put it on the coffee table,

* walk as far as i can while still reaching the coffee table,

* put the item of food on the bookcase,

* ... etc.

It's actually quite comical. It'd be a lot easier to
just sit in the kitchen and eat, but old habits die hard.

(sheesh ... it's pretty obvious how much i'm enjoying
my C/C++ Programming course -- i laid that whole thing
out like an algorithm for a program!)

Just thought of another humorous moment associated
with the accident ...

I was enjoying getting a hard workout twice a week in
a PE class at school. Last Monday (my first day back at
school after getting out of the hospital) i walked all
the way from the main campus of City College to the gym,
about a half-mile, with the walker. It took about 45 minutes.

Partly the reason i did that was just to show the coach
how determined i was to excel in my PE class.

When i got to the gym (very late for my class), i called
the coach over to show him what happened ... and explained
to him that with the walker, every step is a push-up! ;-)

sorry to hear you had yet another accident Joe.

after I had my leg opperation 10 years ago, I used a walker for a few months, there's nothing funny about it.
and then I think of the 6 years with the cane...I remember once when some moron stayed with me
to prepare his piece for AFMM, once the show was over it was too much trouble to help me with my equipment,
help me haul my crap back to the car. and then I had buy him a train ticket to get him to leave town (& leave me alone) the next day.
I was walking around with a cane and this fool imposes himself on me.

last week I was talking with my bartender, my headshrinker (no kidding. her day job is a social worker/psychologist)
and I was asking why people with a really high IQ do dumb crap. She told me the answer was too
complex and I should surf some Google. After a bit of independent research and discussion with
my colleagues, I've come to the conclusion that while there are standardized tests for IQ,
if there's one for common sense, maybe someone can tell me about it.

The most important things aren't taught in schools, like

I've found The Screwtape Letters awesome. Here is a quote
if you wish (Screwtape Letter XVIII). As a high level demon
writes to a lower level one about humanity, one can see
things differently.

The whole philosophy of Hell rests on recognition of the axiom that
one thing is not another thing, and, specially, that one self is not
another self. My good is my good and your good is yours. What one
gains another loses. Even an inanimate object is what it is by
excluding all other objects from the space it occupies; if it
expands, it does so by thrusting other objects aside or by absorbing
them. A self does the same. With beasts the absorption takes the
form of eating; for us, it means the sucking of will and freedom out
of a weaker self into a stronger. "To be" means "to be in
competition".

Sympathy is feeling sorry for someone. Compassion is empathy.
I'm not going to go on about any of my medical problems, because I'm not looking for either.
Also I don't think any of the tuning lists are a place for this, even meta tuning.

Joe privately emailed me and I'll publicly accept his appology here.

Thanks to everyone for their get-well-soon wishes ...
i'm making progress, in fact am now able to drive my car
and even walk around the house a bit without crutches,
but i'm pretty sure that it's going to take a very long
time for the ankle to heal completely, so it will be
awhile before i can run or ride my bicycle again.

There's never a good time to have an accident like this,
but this one cut me down at a particularly busy time in
my life ... i'm trying hard not to let it put too much
of a cramp in my style, but everyone i know is cautioning
me to take it easy and not try too fast to get back to normal.

Didn't i write an email to you thanking you for those CDs
a long time ago? I thought i did, if not, then thanks very much!
Been so busy that i haven't even unwrapped them yet, but i
do look forward to listening especially to _Raven_, which
is my favorite of all your pieces.

The truth is that except for the music that i'm obliged
to hear at the lessons i give, i really haven't been
listening to any music much lately. I've been deeply
involved in intellectual pursuits where "background music"
would be too much of a distraction. Just going thru a phase,
i'm sure.
