It's been a while since....cartoons

Is the world getting a wake up call? Does this all make sense?

Check out Iran's response to the cartoons.

http://www.israelnn.com/news.php3?id=98193

As I see it, an irreligous Danish paper produced cartoons back in September,
used now to be a license for mayhem and threat.

Iran's main paper will now host Holocaust cartoons, even while the nation cut
all ties to Denmark, and its Religious leader (and actual leader) says the
cartoons are a zionist plot as revenge for the Hamas win.

One thing the Muslim world seems aghast at is that Europe has more confidence
in the reality of the Holocaust than it does in the omnipotence of Mohamed.
How can they ever get past that?

This war has just started.

Did anyone think that bombs that
created 1000 foot wide fire balls would have to be used on
Japan before the Pearl Harbor attack? ( I've heard the bomb
that destroyed Hiroshima was. ) And it wasn't considered
so bad that the Japanesse leadership felt it should im-
mediately surrender. Think about this. Nuclear war had
actually started against Japan, with perhaps according to
one estimate, 75,000 dead in a fraction of a second and they
did NOT immediately surrender.

This is enough for now.

Their level of offensiveness is not related to your ability to find
them, but I'm sure you knew that...

+++++++++++Exactly. The Japanesse leadship failed to get
the message with the first nuke. Therefore even
more had to die with the second. We are dealing
with people just as fanatical now. The kamikaze
pilots were flying into U.S. ships at sea.Kamikaze
means 'divine wind'. Today suicide
bombers exist, with plans they believe to be divine.
Now planes have been used to fly
into buildings. These people cannot be reasoned with
nor will they surrender.

Hope you saw the first 8 minutes of the
'Daily Show' Feb 8th. They did the cartoons, sort of.

"Threni" was Stravinsky's first completely serial work. It is rarely
performed and recorded, but I think it is a major masterpiece, especially of
serial music. Webern may have done his dissertation on Isaac, but this work
of Stravinsky's is, to my ears, an amazing melding of renaissance polyphonic
style and serial technique, with mensuration canons out the wazoo. The duet
passages could have been written by Lassus (if Lassus had been smoking
crack, that is). Anyway, in the interest of sharing the neatness, if you go
to this location:

http://nagarjuna.onlinestoragesolution.com/Stravinsky/Threni/

you will find an mp3 of Stravinsky conducting Threni, a PDF scan of the
score, and a few articles I snatched off JSTOR that discuss the piece: the
one from Music Theory Spectrum entitled "Stravinsky as Serialist: The
Sketches for Threni", by David Smyth, is especially interesting. There are
no cartoons of Mohammed in the folder, but as an extra bonus, there is a
recording of Stravinsky's last composition, "The Owl and the Pussycat" which
I have been listening to obsessively of late.

Wow, what a goldmine for anyone interested in _Threni_!
Thanks, Dante!

Hmm ... "Lassus smoking crack" sounds like a great
name for a new piece ... i think i'll use it :)

Offensive or not, the reaction of Muslims the world over reveals just
what a sick, twisted, and perverse violence-worshipping culture they
have. Not a peep from so-called "civilized" Islam. Not one voice of
reason (at least that that I've heard)

Just the same after Sept. 11th...where were the "fatwas" against
terrorists? Not one. It was revealed since then that many many
American Muslim groups have been funneling money to Hamas, etc.

BTW, have any of you seen this ritual celebration of the "Martyrdom"
of Mohammed's son (or is it brother?) where they walk around the
streets all bloody and self-mutilated?

The elephant in the room that people refuse to acknowledge is that
this kind of shit has to die for humanity to survive. I think these
people need to suffer *more* cartoons, a daily barrage of them, and
either learn to grow up or self-destruct.

I could say the same thing about our fat mega-church culture, but you
all know already what I'm talking about, and I'm sure agree. After
all, these folks are the reason Bush is in office, anally raping our
country daily.

I won't respond to anything else in your post, as this caught my eye.
*I* read a number of accounts of clerics and community leaders urging
calm and restraint and repudiating the violence. I can't source it for
you, now, and don't think it necessary. Not to mention that you *know*
the protests and deaths make good news coverage, but some press
conference or announcement does not. While there may be large numbers
of people who took part in those riots and violence, I won't trash an
entire religion/culture.

On another note, how's the music going? Haven't heard much from you
lately - are you on another theatre scoring program at the moment?

Cheers,
Jon

Too bad there wasn't enough press about the anti-violence calm and restraint and
repudiating the violence folks. One would think this could have calmed the shitstorm down right away.

I think it was too bad as well, but I doubt it would make a
difference. It appears to me that most, if not all, of the people that
would be involved in violent protests (burning of embassies, etc)
aren't particularly well-educated or informed, and are also in
countries/territories where the 'news' is going to be skewed anyway.
And I tend to believe reports that much of the violence was being
stoked by extremists.

But even the most cursory glance, if you wanted to know if there was
*any* reporting of Islamic voices speaking out against the violent
protests, finds material:

- from the very first hit on Google using the search terms "Islamic
clerics condemn protests" finds an article with the following:

_'Inexcusable'_actions_ Some Muslim clerics helped to persuade the
crowd to disperse as the violence died down, the BBC's Jim Muir
reports from the scene. Lebanon's most prominent Sunni leader, Saad
al-Hariri, vowed to track down and prosecute those involved in the
attacks. "We tell our Christian brothers that any stone thrown against
a house or a car was an insult to Muslims," he said from Paris.

- I almost laughed when I saw that even Fox news had info about this
area of non-reportage:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,184184,00.html

Nonetheless, I don't know how much power reasoned voices have against
a mob mentality. One can always hope, but...

Best,
Jon

True enough. But we can compare the relative calm of the rest of
civilization in similar circumstances, can't we?

Not to mention the other 'elephants' of Islam: so-called 'honor
killings', brutal punishments, cavalier beheadings, extreme and even
under the table Jew hating...

"...and even

From what I heard recently, Israel (the Jews) have had
cartons printed about them for years in the Arab press.

Also, it's not like these cartoons about Mohammad were making
fun of a prophet anyway.

Do we want to see Iran with nukes? Do we really want to
wait a few years regarding them? This war might end in the
21st century. I firmly believe we will win, but I don't see
any sense of urgency on our part in the last year or more.
Sadly, we may have to lose a city the next time round. It
seems little else can wake people up to the fact that we
can't just wait this matter out and hope it all goes away.
