Annie Lennox and Bjork are better.

i would agree on the latter. i think bjork is a musician than a different caliber that annie lennox.
i could not see the former doing her own string arrangements for one.
i think bjork might be working herself out of the music business though
being that smart. unlike us

I think I agree generally with this, though I prefer Lennox's voice.
Bjork is one of those people I can't seem to ignore - even when I
don't like the way she sings/sounds, I still find her explorations
fascinating! Certainly one of the most seeking 'pop' personas in a
long time.

Film, and all that. I didn't see the last thing that she and (I guess
it's her boyfriend/husband?) her guy did - isn't he the guy that did
the "Cremaster" series of art films? Anyway, there was a profile of
this recent film, maybe in the New Yorker, and it was _out_.

Cheers,
Jon

Utter nonsense. Anyway, isn't comparing Bjork with Gershwin a little
strange?

Yep. I love what she does, but she's going to have to add to her bag of singing tricks to
make her work valid in her "middle" period. It would be nice if Bjork returned to the acoustic
direction of her MTV Unplugged show - meantone organ, gamelan...since everyone is doing
the electronica thang.

What do you think of the all-vocal disc "Medula"? I found parts of it
quite compelling...

why? Gershwin was a song writer and bjork does more of her orchestration than possibly george did.

It's pretty good. Dark. She works with a lot of collaborators on that one.
I've only listened to Drawing Restraint 9 twice. She kinda lost me, but I'll give it another try.

Gershwin was more than a song writer, and while he may not have always
orchestated his show music, he obviously did so with his other music.

somehow i had gotten the impression that grofe this stuff.
but would be glad to hear differently.
American in Paris is one unique piece of music , and i am not sure if it totally works for me, but that is OK since it is so darn unique.
i can't say the other artist have done something that compares to this

i was under the understanding he hadn't done his orchestration, people like grofe had done it.
but happy t ohear otherwise , if the case.
Where i do think Gerswin distinguishes himself is with say An American in Paris.
while i don't even think it is best piece and not sure if it really works, but i think is the most visionary and unique things he did.
Say the other two in question have done little outside their circle of fashion

Unfortunate use of the word "obviously". Arguably his 'greatest hit',
"Rhapsody in Blue" was orchestrated by Ferde Grofe, Paul Whiteman's
arranger (and obviously a talented composer on his own). Not only
that, but the famous clarinet glissando that starts the work is wasn't
an invention of Gershwin, but the clarinetist in Whiteman's band
played it as a joke instead of the scale that Gershwin originally
wrote - he liked it, and it stayed in.

While he claimed to have done all the orchestrations on further works,
there are apparantly feelings he had assistance. Then there is the
story with him visiting Ravel and asking to study with him. Upon
hearing Gershwin's earnings from his compositions and performing,
Ravel remarked that maybe he should be the one studying with Gershwin.

But this is all picking of nits - he was a talented songwriter, and to
a certain extent, composer. He might not have gotten as far as he did
without his brother's great lyrics, but it would be really interesting
to see where he would have gone had he not died so young.

Cheers,
Jon
