In my research in preparation for an interview with the daughter of
Nicholas Slonimsky (a new little pet project of mine) I've had to
research an "urban dictionary" since Slonimsky's cat was named "Grody,"
and I only recently learned that "Grody" or "Grody to the max," was a
slang term for "gross and dirty..." So much for what *I* know.

However, I was also intrigued to find, in the urban dictionary, the
correct acronym for "The War Against Terrorism..."

It is, as one might expect: TWAT...

Those terms originated in Los Angeles's San Fernando Valley,
as part of "Valspeak", the lingo used by "Valley Girls",
as enshrined by Moon Unit Zappa in the lyrics to her big
hit song "Valley Girl" from May 1982.

Her dad Frank wrote the music and recorded it, and it
was the peak of his popularity. It was quite a pop-culture
phenomenon that year. Another term Moon used which really
caught on for awhile was "Gag me with a spoon".

Thanks so much, Monz, for keeping me "in the loop." Like totally, I
knew *some* of the slang, but was missing others.

It figures then, since Slonimsky worked with Zappa that he would know
about the Valley Girls slang and "Grody," especially since Slonimsky
had an interest in lexicography.

He reportedly only spoke Latin to his daughter for the first 5 years
of her life, to give her a good background, but I'll have to confirm
that when I do the interview...

best to you, Monz!

Joe
