That's a neat idea, fanning the frets rather than stepping them.
Makes perfectly good sense (cents?) for smallish deviations from
12-EDO, so 13-EDO is a natural - and maybe 11-EDO too?

I bumped this link because it now has some little sound samples, etc

Hello Dan & everyone,

It's interesting to hear 13tET used to make music ... er, demo. I
can see why it is not the scale of choice for mainstream Western
music. :)

After listening to Chris's demo, I went to sleep with Internet radio
on and had a semi-dream that one of the middle-eastern songs played
by the radio station was in 13tET - singing and all. My hypnogogic
mind thought, "Hmmm, it actually sounds pretty GOOD!"

I wonder if anyone has at hand a comparison of the 13tET intervals
to simple frequency ratios, such as the Partch scale.

Regards,
George

Aloha Dan,

I did listen to your tonal piece in 13tET. Certainly I can see that
13tET has its unique appeal. Thanks for directing me to that piece
and the perspective that listening to it provides on the scale - as
well as the aesthetic enjoyment of the piece itself.

I am thinking in reference to this piece and the discussion of 13tET
as well as Prent's piece that I just posted about: As soon as one
selects a given scale out of the palette of all possible pitches
within the range of (average) human hearing, one has decided to work
with an algorithm. Even if one merely opens one's mouth and
makes "random" utterances, one is working with a particular tool and
the possibilities and limitations that it embodies. One can then
choose to produce a particular effect and work with or against the
chosen tool(s) to produce it as best one can. Sometimes "going with
the flow" is fun for all concerned, but you can really impress
people by pushing a given set of resources to its limits and beyond.

As we say in the part of the USA where I was born: What do y'all
think?

Regards,
George
