Ogg Vorbis players for Macintosh

Hi Kyle, Jon, Dan and all,

Jus did a quick search with KartOO and came up with
this _very_ informative article on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorbis

For example, under the heading Software:

"... the VorbisSoftwarePlayers node at the xiph.org wiki
(http://wiki.xiph.org/index.php/VorbisSoftwarePlayers) has an up-to-date
list of Vorbis-supporting software for all operating systems. You can test
these players using the list of Vorbis audio streams available at
(http://wiki.xiph.org/index.php/VorbisStreams).

Ogg Vorbis can be played using these (and other) players:

JustOgg
(http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive/Abstracts/gst/snd/HyperArchive
.html) for MacOS 9 and lower.
...
VLC media player for Windows, Mac OS X, and Unix-like systems. (GPL)"

There are many (too many?) links there,
but one is to the Vorbis home site; this is
the page you want:
http://www.vorbis.com/download_mac.psp

It lists the following players for Mac:
Audion 3 at http://www.panic.com/audion/
Unsanity Echo at http://www.unsanity.com/echo.html
MacAMP at http://www.subband.com/macamp/

o Audion 3 is now free.
o Echo was "not found" on unsanity, nor was there
anything similar in their product range.
o I couldn't find MacAMP on subband; I suspect
it's been superseded. They only have OSS3D,
an Ipod plugin.

So perhaps Audion 3 may do the job. Not having had a Mac
under my hands for over a decade, I can't check it here.

----

What if Audion 3 doesn't work?

Using the xiph link above, I found these other possibilities:
"MacOS X
------------
Whamb (http://www.whamb.com/): Freeware player with support for Ogg Vorbis,
MP3 and Audio CDs.

Multi-platform
-----------------
VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/):
Open Source player that support virtually every video and audio format.
Mplayer (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/):
Open Source video player that supports also many audio formats.
JOrbisPlayer (http://www.jcraft.com/jorbis/):
Java Player that uses the JOrbis Java decoder
jlGui (http://www.javazoom.net/jlgui/jlgui.html):
Winamp clone for Java
Zinf (http://www.zinf.org/):
Open Source player with support for Ogg Vorbis, as well as MP3, WAV and
Audio CDs.
SnackAmp (http://snackamp.sourceforge.net/):
Tcl/Tk player
HelixPlayer (https://player.helixcommunity.org/):
Open source player from RealNetworks
RealPlayer (http://www.real.com/):
Commercial player from RealNetworks"

--------

For Mac OS 9 and lower, maybe JustOgg will do it.

Here is an abstract:
"Abstract of INFO-MAC archived encoded Mac binary file
'gst/snd/just-ogg-101.hqx'
Uploaded 02/08/2004 590057 bytes

From: "mark white" <markau0@...>
Subject: JustOgg_1.0.1

JustOgg 1.0.1 is a ogg vorbis decoder for PPC macs.

JustOgg can play ogg files and decode ogg files to aiff and wave files.
A 68k (68040 cpu) version of the ogg to aiff/wav file is also included.

-Requirements:
PPC.
68k (68040) for ogg to aiff/wav.
SoundManager 3.0 (SoundManager 3.2.1 and higher recommended).
MacOS 7.1 with Drag and Drop 1.1 and Finder 7.1.3
(MacOS 7.5 and higher recommended)."

---------

Well, there's some stuff to chew over. I also
found a forum post from some guty complaining
about the lack of Ogg Vorbis support on the Mac ...

I'd try the Audion 3 software first.

Regards,
Yahya

Yeah, um, OK, whatever. Wasn't talking about midi, I was merely responding
to the plea of a Mac owner for an option on his machine for the playback of
an audio file. And besides - what good piece of music will stand in a midi
implementation alone?

I understand your evangelism or campaigning, but I want to first find a
solution for Kyle's dilemma, then we can address other issues. So, Mac
users, what's a good .ogg player?

Cheers,
Jon
