And where do those wonderful JI ratios come from Carl?

I think both approaches are valid.

As a fretless guitar player, I'm thinking ratios when I play. But I was using ratios
for 6 or 7 years before I got a fretless guitar. And I tend to think in terms of theory
whenever or whatever I'm coposing or playing.
