opps!

not to disagree with monz's observations, so much as point out that it is the
ear drum which is non-linear, and of course that effect can't be the same for
all individuals.

i did a microtonal guitar demostration for a small group of talented
youngsters in a summer music program, and they all denied they could hear any
difference between 12, 19, 22 and 31...

hardly scientific but i wasn't as shocked as the guy who brought me in.

best, buzzy^

The ear can respond in a nonlinear fashion, just like a great many
resonators all around us in the world. But this doesn't have a
great impact on the way we perceive pitch.

Monz said that pitch perception is exponential, but I believe it's
more accurate to say it's logarithmic. Logarithms are the
"inverse" function of exponentials, so I suppose one could look at
it either way with enough effort, but generally pitch is described
on a logarithmic scale (cents, Erv Wilson's base-2 logs, etc.).

Exponentials and logarithms are not linear, as in, if you plot their
output you get a curve instead of a straight line. But the sense in
which the ear drum resonates in a "nonlinear" fashion is a different
kind of nonlinear.

Sorry, I know this is MMM; please feel free to post questions or
corrections to the main tuning list.

Heya Buzz,

Cool website. Even your higher-resolution version is pretty
lean, which I think is a very good thing (I hate the cluttered,
ad-laden sites that seem to be the norm these days). Very
nice photos and layout.
