I got a Marshall MXL 2001 about 3 years ago and I like it very well for
general purpose micing. I've used it for voice as well as acoustic
instruments. Good quality under $200.

My bandmate bought the 990/991 MXL mic pack from Guitar Center for $99
- a special they had and may still have as of today. This is the
MusiciansFriend info page:

The instrument mic at least did a good job on my 12" frame drum.

As for me, I went with a Shure SM57 instrument mic - looked like a
good combination of relative low cost and good reputation among the
recording types.

Hello Dan,
I have been happy with my AKG C-3000 mics (stereo
pair). I haven't used them for really high SPL stuff
(guitar/bass cabs), but I have used them for guerrilla
recording of live rock and acoustic acts. I mostly use
them for recording acoustic in my (bedroom)
studio...They DO put a nice shine on the fretless 12
string (strung with nylon strings).
I have also used the C-1000 for some live vocals (duo
female vox/guitar). I don't think I would use it live
with a loud band, as IMHO it lacks the midrange bump
of a SM-58 or the like.
...full bodied without being brawny..delicate yet
complex...er ..I mean....
