New edition of TTSS and "Aerophonious Intent" - a new adaptively tuned piece

Hello MakeMicroMusic,

I'm happy to announce that the second edition of
Tuning Timbre Spectrum Scale (TTSS) is finally available
(after having sold out the first edition a year or so ago).

The basic idea is the same as the first edition:
specifying the relationship between the spectrum of a sound
and the intervals (and hence the tunings) in which the sound
can be played most consonantly.
In case you haven't seen it before, the basic ideas are
described at:

http://eceserv0.ece.wisc.edu/~sethares/consemi.html

The new edition has quite a few things that might interest
people on MakeMicroMusic, including many new sound examples
and compositions. The CD is now a CD-ROM (instead of an audio CD)
which now includes over 3.5 hours of sound examples,
mostly in mp3 format (though there is also about 10 minutes
of video in .avi form).

There is a much enlarged (and hopefully improved)
discussion of adaptive tunings, including material
about the hermode tuning and deLaubenfel's spring tuning.
There are now 13 compositions in adaptive tuning
(there were only two in the first edition) -- I have placed
"Aerophonius Intent" at:

http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~sethares/aerophonius.mp3

As always -- feedback/comments/criticisms are walcome.

There is also a new chapter on Thai classical
tuning and timbres, and how these can be explored in
a modern context... including a number of new compositions
in 7-tet.

The table of contents is at

http://eceserv0.ece.wisc.edu/~sethares/contents.html

the contents of the CD (with links to a number of
downloadable mp3s) is at

http://eceserv0.ece.wisc.edu/~sethares/html/TTSS2.html

and the first chapter is online at:

http://eceserv0.ece.wisc.edu/~sethares/paperspdf/ttss_intro.pdf

I welcome comments and thoughts, and if you happen to notice
any typos or bloopers in the web pages, please let me know.

This is great, Bill! I was looking for your book on Amazon recently and was sad that it was out of print. Do you have a preference for a place to order it from?

Oh, two of the links you posted (the one for Aerophonius Intent and the CD contents) are not working for me, although the others are fine.

BTW, I wanted to run your Matlab code, and since I don't have Matlab, I installed Scilab (http://scilabsoft.inria.fr/) and found that it did a fine job of importing your code into its own format.

Happy New Year, Bill!

Yadayadayada... what about our group discount? :)

Great to see it back, this time I'll get my own copy - any best place to get it (either best discount or seller where *you* get the most mileage)?

Cheers,
Jon

Apparently hasn't shown up on Amazon.com yet... Still shows the old
edition out of print.

Any idea when the new edition will "hit the streets"?

Thanks,

Rick

My copy of TTSS2 arrived today, so I was going to look back at Bill's
notes to see if he had mentioned what's new in the 2nd edition...

I just tried following these links from Bill's posting:

http://eceserv0.ece.wisc.edu/~sethares/consemi.html
http://eceserv0.ece.wisc.edu/~sethares/html/TTSS2.html

and they are dead. The table of contents is live:

The new edition is some 60 pages longer than the previous edition. I was
wondering if there is a list of what is new or significantly revised, as
compared to the first edition. Since I read the first edition, I wanted to
quickly look through just what is new in the 2nd edition.

Thanks,
Rick
