Soft synths and notation recommendations Logic Pro 7

Having been playing around with tuning and computers for longer than I'd like to admit, I have used many diverse platforms and formats as they have come and gone.

I have come to the conclusion, that the only system that will entirely do what I want has become available within the last couple of months.

With the dollar falling like a sinking ship, it has now become very affordable.

I took a big gamble on OS X, about three years ago, and now Logic Pro 7 CAN microtune (12 notes per octave per song - more when running multiple songs & to the nearest .1 of a cent)
+ an acceptable scoring system, totally integrated.

Logic has a very steep learning curve which I struggled with, but now many of the difficulties have been resolved, so that newbies won't need to go through all the tribulations that I suffered learning Logic.

A complete set up is going to cost you a couple of thousand $'s, (G5 + Software + Soundcard) but Apple offer all sorts of educational discounts and credit which
have brought the prices down to about a quarter of what it cost me to get my dual G5 up and running.

Details on how the microtuning is configured in Logic Pro 7 can be found at:

Well you did ask;-)

Well, I'm not sure what special needs you have, but we are at a point where there are a lot of options for quite specific microtonal realizations in electronic form, and I feel it important to add that it doesn't have to be as expensive a route at you have traveled. Yet the only thing that is important is that each person finds a solution that works for them, and you've achieved that. Tis a good thing...

Cheers,
Jon

if one already has a Mac , it isn't really that more expensive.
Although i have just scratched the surface with Logic, i did do a bit of work with Brad Laner recently and found the results quite good.

My favorite software for writing microtones is Csound,
its free, and its capable of doing anything I want,
but I can't use it in realtime on my crummy computer,
so I have to compose note by note (or by using another
script in python to squirt out the score).

Brian,

Yup, you and Prent. No one can argue with his results, same with member Bill Sethares and many others. Lots of ways to make music these days!

Cheers,
Jon
