DJW's 17tet example

Hi,

A while back, Daniel posted a midi file of an example etude in 17tet, wondering aloud what it would be like if someone else did a rendering/version of it. I've been getting up to speed with some new tools lately, and Dan has a big place in my artistic heart, so I thought I'd spend a few minutes with it.

We listened and discussed this elsewhere, but I thought I'd make just a brief mention here because I recently talked about 2 softsynths I've been using, spending the bulk of the time on the rgc:audio z3ta+. This one, however, uses VirSyn's Tera 2.1, and I really like this instrument.

Just to let you know, my recorded version took the midi file into Sonar 4, and I used a patch I came up with in Tera to realize it. Tera is a slam dunk: feed it a .scl file and it will play in that intonation; better than that, by default it is set up with instruments on all 16 midi channels, so you can either layer them (by making two go to the same channel) or tune them all to differing intonations. One of the 'cute' serendipities of this particular patch is that while the lower end of the instrument mimics some kind of clavichord, the higher you go it tends to get almost flute-like, rounding off the attack transients and high freqs. During the latter half of the etude it almost serves to semi-orchestrate the three voices, or at least having the top sing out a bit.

Beyond that, just a couple of obvious tempo fluctuations, and then the audio is sent out with just a little bit of small bright room verb courtesy the Lexicon Pantheon verb (which is a lovely verb included with the Producer Edition of Sonar 4).

It's short:

Cheers,
Jon

KG,

Sorry to say, Macs are foreign territory to me. It might be a MIME setting or something, but the file is a straight-forward .ogg file.

Maybe someone else will be smarter than I ...

Cheers,
Jon

17 does have a very appealing sound...

I like them both! Both excellent in different ways....

But Daniel, this work rocks! I listened to it 3 times. I like your sense of
line and neo-Bach texture always gets and keeps me interested.

The timbre on this is very vivid too, and amazingly, sounds bright to me, but
not dissonant with 17-tet thirds, which is not something I would expect.
Bravo !
