Hi Gene,

Yes indeed. Also for a practical composing list as well.
Probably the examples weren't so well chosen for this
forum.

Things like keyboard layouts,
or tables of chords in a piece
could be presented in the same way.

One thought, maybe it could be used
as a kind of "whiteboard" which one
could move over to and use if one needed
to show diagrams and discuss them in
an easy way - whatever group we have.

Hi Aaron,

The script is free as it is
and is fully functional, just
lacks some of the more advanced
features in the pro version

I think I didn't make it clear
that the script is actually
hosted on your own server.
Basically you purchase the script
from them. Once purchased, you
can do what you like with it including
hacking it if you want, and
users post hacks on their forums.
It is only a one off payment.

It is used by the agents who
manage the sales of my programs
for me - for their own discussion
forums - so I know it works
well and is reliable.

Perhaps it might even be possible
to hack it ourselves to make it
so it will do digests though
I haven't learnt enough Perl
yet to want to attempt that myself.

I can see some disadvantages in going
for a completely free solution -
if the hosting too is to be free
particularly - you may have
very little in the way of contact
with those who host the forum,
and little feedback if anything
should go wrong at all.

Also Google groups is ad supported,
even if text based which is less obtrusive
i agree. But hosting ones own
script somewhere has the advantage
that you don't need to have any
ads at all.

There are no ads
even in the free version of
Discus BTW, the only restriction is
that you are requested to leave the link
to them on the forum page
in the free version.

There are many other scripts
available, some completely free.
This is the best of the ones I've tried out
but I've only tried one or two of them.

There is an enormous list here if anyone
else is interested in the idea
of hosting the site ourselves
- either privately or at some
institution:

http://www.thinkofit.com/webconf/forumsoft.htm

Usually they have example forums you can visit
and evaluate.

One thing I look out for
is whether users of the forums seem
to get on well together and be polite
- I think users are often a bit
less polite if they find the forum
frustrating to use :-).

Hi Rick,

Ok, sorry. We've been discussing it in metatuning if anyone wants
to follow it up there. I was meaning to address the matter of this
forum and sorry for wandering off topic in my post.
