Microtonal Firebird

Hi there,

Just to mention an idea I've been exploring.

Give it a whirl to see what we are missing :-).

http://www.robertinventor.com/microtonal_firebird_scripts/discus.cgi

You can post as "anonymous"

As you will see, it does have lots of advantages in
the way of display formatting - things you can't
do with yahoogroups.

The pro verison will let you upload any kinds of attachments.
The free version only lets you upload images.

One big disadvantage for a high volume list like
this one - it doesn't yet let you send
the e-mails in digest form. That is something
the company are thinking about adding in the future
but there are practical difficulties involved
apparently.

You _can_ opt to only be sent notifications about particular
threads.

This is the free version. The pro version will
also let you edit and delete posts after you
post them and has other useful features.

It is also possible to send e-mails to the
forum via e-mail rather than through the
web page but I would need to contact
my web host to set that up so it
doesn't do that yet.

Maybe it isn't quite what we need now
because of the digests problem,
but I wonder if it might be useful
for something or other?

The ability to do formatting would be very useful on a theory list.

I'd love this as a solution to Yahoo or Google.

I proposed this a few months ago using php on Metatuning
and some folks thought it wasn't a good idea.

The BBS is back!

Great, glad someone sees it's good points :-).

Robert-

I do see it's good points, too. It's attractive, etc., but I prefer being able
to attach things I want to without having to buy $150 of software !!!

I think your fears about Google are warranted, but both unlikely and minor.
Unlikely iin that Google has always had a less obnoxious corporate style than
Yahoo, and that I just believe in putting my faith in that they won't pull
the plug/change things radically on us.

That being said, if it turns out to be true, we could certainly do other
things anyway....

Hi Aaron,

Great, that's fine.

Yes probably (hopefully) they will be
minor points.

Yes I agree that they are probably less
likely to lose our group than Yahoo.
It is more their speciality after all, and they
will have plenty of storage space to
provide multiple backups. I don't
feel quite as sure about it as one
does if you can have your own backup
as well - but it is probably better
than Yahoo.

However, I do feel that it is quite possible that they may
change their policies on ads as they did add ads
to the search results after resisting them for
a long time.

It is also possible that some format change
they make may affect us quite unintentionally
on their part.

Anyway, if we are happy to move on
at any time if needed, it is no
great concern at all, so in that
sense minor, and may never happen.

The file attachments upload and threading
are both big points in its favour :-).

I'm used to the format, there's a couple of php boards I hang at.

http://www.organissimo.org/forum/ is one I frequent quite a bit.
