how "original" is original?? (sounds)

I was interested in people's opinions... those who make their own
original electronic sounds and don't use any (or many) presets. I
guess that's Jacky and probably several others.

How "original" is original? Is a sound original if somebody "tweaks"
a preset in on direction or another, or do people consider sounds
original only if they are build up from scratch... let's say from
some kind of "vanilla" setting?

I was wondering, since I have heard that many sound designers start
with "already made" sounds and work them from there, rather than
starting from "scratch..."

Any opinions??
