MMM on computers documentation project

Hello, there, everyone, and I'd like to suggest some ideas for a
project proposed not so long ago by Jon Szanto: documenting solutions
for making microtonal music using computer platforms and operating
systems such as IBM-compatible (DOS, Windows, OS/2); Macintosh; and
Linux, and operating system running on both platforms and others.

What I might propose is a project at once timely in providing ready
help for interested or curious users, and open in inviting
participation from people who are just now getting involved, or who
might get involved in the future, possibly in part as the result of
this project itself.

For example, people here who already have lots of experience in
computer musicmaking and recording might seek quickly to put together
basic information on options for different platforms and OSes, so that
we can refer newcomers, or anyone wanting a convenient source of
information, to a convenient and friendly compilation of options.

At the same time, we could make this an open process, encouraging new
contributions from people who either try the suggested options or
can report on others. Such an open project might help to convey the
range of approaches to "making micro music," not so surprising given
the variety of computing approaches as well as musical styles.

An open project might have the advantage not only of providing helpful
information, but of collecting and communicating it in a way that
serves to encourage participation and built community.

Most appreciatively,

Margo

That is a GREAT idea Margo!

I need more information and help
regarding making microtonal music
on my computer. I'm sure there are other
people in the group who need help on their
compositions as well.
I use my Finale program when I can.
But, I still compose the old fashioned
way....paper, pencil, and an acoustic
instrument such as the guitar or the piano.
I would like to use my computer more for
my compositions. So, I am ready for the
documentation project!

Take care!
Joel

I'm not quite sure how to kick off the ball on this project. Would
someone else care to try?

This is a great idea, Margo !!!

Linux/*nix specific---
I think a great place to start would be Dave Phillips page for Linux users,

http://linux-sound.org/

which really is the most thorough and perhaps oldest page out there for
MIDI/audio software and drivers, etc. for Linux.

That really might even be all there is to it, but other Linux users here who
may wish to direct questions to me about certain apps, etc. may want to do
so. I'll tell you at least whether I've even used 'em ;)

Other than that, I've written my own apps for compiling a custom microtonal
midi language to a text representation of a midi file, which then becomes
midi with a linux version of 't2mf' (text to midi file). I used it to write
the 'Juggler' and other things. If anyone else who uses Linux wants to check
it out, I'll send it on. It's written in Python, the only language anyone
really needs anymore, IMO. (yes, I'm baiting for a language shootout ;) )

Cheers,
Aaron.
