Kyle,

Are you aware of the Max Magic Microtuner?

/16tone/

That should give you all the info you could want about it; I _did_ check and it can play back tunings using the QuickTime GM synth, so it might work for your class projects.

Cheers,
Jon

Thanks, Jon, I've downloaded it, and the demo mode is very impressive.
It wouldn't let me purchase a license, though - it would just start
over every time I clicked the "purchase" button. I haven't generally
found software developers reluctant to take my credit card info. %^)

I'll give the URL to my students, too.

Thanks,

Kyle

Have you tried the free version? That's what I've been using with
FM7. Granted, I'm still a beginning microtonalist (was on tuning
list 3 years ago, but got out of music for 2 years), but the free
version has served well enough for the simple purpose of trying out
tunings.

I'm not sure whether I'll get the paid version or go for Lil' Miss
Scale Oven when I'm ready to upgrade to tuning software with more
advanced features. LMSO's developer has done microtonal stuff for a
long time too and is also a knowledgeable, enthusiastic and generally
nice guy. LMSO's web page is here:

Also, somebody made an interesting discovery concerning the custom
mtof (MIDI-to-frequency) Max/MSP object generated by this software.
The idea is to use plug this object into a Max/MSP synth patch to
retrofit it for the tuning specifically encapsulated into this
object. The discovery was that this object also works with synths
external to Max/MSP, including the free Apple DLS Synth included with
Mac OS X.
