Amusing, but... If they want to bring in random casual listeners, they'll
have to get a streaming format that works. Their streaming samples of
".pls" files don't appear to work with any browser I have.

It's Shoutcast, which is the best streaming platform I know of.
Winamp may be the only player that supports it, however.

No problem with XMMS

Oh, it worked for me - just works terribly. You get a couple of seconds of sound, then buffer loading, then sound, buffer, etc. If they don't end up with another method, they aren't gonna make a splash.

(BTW, when did the world begin to accept BETA work as Finished work? I think that is lamer than anything I know. You got your shit together, you got balls? Make it 1.0, developers!)

I *love* the idea. I *support* the idea. I await a solid implementation.

Cheers,
Jon

You're on dialup, right? The bitrate of the file you tried to play is
probably just too high. On mperia this may be up to the artist... I
looked at two songs and one was 128kps, the other 192 -- both too high
to stream over dialup. And oddly, not low enough to motivate me to
buy the songs.

Consider yourself a beta tester. It behooves them to open the site
to get artists onboard.

To get artists and listeners on board, they need to have a streaming format that is as ubiquitous as possible. If "only Winamp" supports whatever they're using, then they're not going for wide distribution. I think these are people with hearts in the right place, but their implementation needs some tweaking before they go public.

Hi Carl,

{you wrote...}

Yep, as are the majority of users, which was sort of my point. More below...

Hmmm, I used to be able to stream any 128 file on mp3.com. But this points out the value of having the files in a couple of different formats, and while it may not be open source, people do _not_ have problems with RealAudio streaming, and I would venture to guess the same for Windows Media (yeah, I know, yuck, but the point is to get the music heard, right?).

>Consider yourself a beta tester. It behooves them to open the site to get >artists onboard.

I'll consider being a beta tester on material that is really important to me; I don't consider beta platforms as a place I'd want to pay money to buy something. It doesn't behoove anyone if the service doesn't serve their 'product', but I certainly understand the need to get a roster of music. It's a shame this idea couldn't just be rolled on top of the technology of zebox or that click-thingy that people have recently moved to (Joe P., others) - those seem to work fine.

Cheers,
Jon

Perfectly said, and I especially agree with their hearts!

128kbps can't be streamed over dialup, obviously.

Carl,

Well, I would figure that, but I always thought the "lo-fi" stream on mp3.com was 128 - sheesh, it must have been 44kbps or something, right?

I never used streaming on mp3, but yes, something like that.
