Hi, friends,

I recently bought my 1st laptop, a vintage 1996 "el cheapo" that takes only a mono dynamic or ceramic microphone. As I only spent $50 for the laptop itself, I don't want to spend money that I don't have for an omni-directional mic for it . . . but do I have a choice [other than "Forget it!", please ;-) ]?

Is there a relatively inexpensive, omni-directional mic that comes with a small stand and a mono jack for a computer, that will do for recording a small group of singers or instrumentalists -- highest-possible fidelity not being absolutely necessary, please? Might you also be able to suggest a vendor for it? (Shopping online is OK!)

Thanks!

Hi!

Been years since being in a Rat Shack, but they used to offer a factory
second from Crown on a PZM microphone that sounds ideal for your needs. It
is a battery powered condenser microphone with a nearly hemispherical
pattern. Remember, garbage in = garbage out, the quality of the microphone
will be nearly the sole determination of how good it is going to sound
otherwise, so break out a few bucks if you have to, it's important!

Also, check out this month's issue of Electronic Musician, mostly devoted to
making music using a laptop. The cover has a Neumann TL-103, I don't think
you need to spend THAT much!!
