Yeah, 350MHz is pretty slow for running these softsynths. Having your
sound break up & crackle is one sign of overload. You can try messing with
the buffer sizes and latency, if you can find such controls in your
softsynth.

As far as "optimal" speed... That would be "as fast as possible".

Yes. 2 to 2.5 is pretty typical these days. I have 1.8 Gigahertz and it
does fairly well.
