For a limited time only, here is the final product of a piece that I
posted as a work-in-progress a while back.

"The Girl in the Cellophane Sarong"
http://rm-and-jo.laughingsquid.org/temp/gss.mp3

It's a 9MB download. This is mostly 9 instance of Big Tick Rhino. The
middle movement has 3 instances of Rhino and 1 instance of a
FXpansion!DR-005 with my set of home-brew percussion instruments.

Cheers,
Rick

Woops... Forgot the most important thing! The outer movements are in a
Pelog tuning taken (slightly modified & expanded) from Sethares TTSS
"Swastigitha" gamelan. The middle movement is in Carlos' Harmonic scale.

Downloading now...

Apologies if you've posted details of your system before, but: how much RAM do you run? I'm impressed if one can indeed run 9 instances of a synth - do you ever run into latency issues when you are recording, or is this another one of your projects where you enter your notated score into Finale and play through Rhino?

Cheers,
Jon

Hi Jon --

No problem. I have 512 meg of RAM, 1.8 GHz CPU, Windows XP. I run VAZ
Modular as the VST host, with Rhino instances as "channel inserts" in the
mixing console. (Heh!) While running, it appears to require about 300 meg
of real memory. I do find that about 8 or 9 voices is really pushing my
system to 100%.

Yes, it's Finale-to-Rhino. I don't have any problems with latency when
composing. I use a MIDI keyboard, input through Finale which sends MIDI
output via Midi yoke to VAZ Modular, and I don't experience noticeable lag.
Well, I don't play very quickly, but with chord/melody playing at moderate
speed, it doesn't seem like molasses or anything.

I use an Aureal Vortex sound card. It is full duplex, so I can record the
sound card's output with CoolEdit, which is sometimes useful. But for this
type of music, I have recently been capturing the audio output just by
using the "Capture" command in VAZ Modular and going to 44kHz stereo WAV
files. The synth output goes direct to disk and bypasses the sound card
entirely, so it's very nice. I use CoolEdit to adjust the overall volume
and clip the silent ends of the WAV files, then output an MP3 copy.
