Timidity, how? I thought it only supported pitch bend retuning.

Sorry, I don't worry about real time, so we weren't on the same page.
In his chapter in the Csound Book Smaragdis tells us that "Modern computer hardware allows us just barely to reach the level of performance of modern synthesizers", and I presume he knows what he is talking about. I'd also presume that having a supercomputer do it instead of what is on your desktop would cancel the "just barely", so if you have a Cray X1 handy you should try it and report back.

Yeah, funny enough, that is true. You'd think they'd be
more powerful. Even without the overhead of the huge OS,
I guess special-purpose hardware is still that much faster.

I'm not a CSound user... anybody know how it, or one's
use of it, would have to change to do realtime stuff? PCs
may soon be fast enough, and special-purpose add-in cards
for 'realtime CSound' were marketed years ago (I hear the
Scopeware stuff 'never really worked', though).

The Smaragdis chapter was on optimizing Csound instruments, which would certainly be a requirement. I rendered a nine-minute piece by Pavan called "Amber" which took more than a day. Normally, one would expect only a few minutes for that to be accomplished; I don't know what Pavan did but whatever it was you don't do it in real time.

Yes, that's correct. But audio and MIDI are still difficult
to set up on Linux. It's not working correctly on my machine
at home yet. I plan to download Planet CCRMA which I heard
now supports Redhat 8.0 and the SB Live.

I stick with my assessment that ZynAddSubFX is the first
free realtime microtonal softsynth.

A little bit. Didn't see any microtonal things inside, but
for a free program, it's pretty good.
