Olá all,

This is a brief post of things that I'd posted to "The Tuning
List" over past few days, since it looks like not everyone here
is subscribed to it. I hope someone finds something useful among
this, and if you've already seen this on the other list, please
excuse this repetition.

At the Journal of the Royal Musical Association
<http://www3.oup.co.uk/roymus/contents/>,
"Schenker versus Schoenberg versus Schenker: The Difficulties of
a Reconciliation"
by Gianmario Borio, Università degli Studi di Pavia, Cremona
http://www3.oup.co.uk/roymus/current/1260250.sgm.abs.html
There's a link to a Full-Text 25 page PDF  (171 KB) at the
bottom.
(The PDF is security protected to prevent copying of text from it)

The Fado from Portugal. It's pronounced "faa-dhoo" and literally
means "fate". Here's an offhand link to a page (with mp3s) about
one of the best Fado singers around, Cristina Branco:

"About Cristina Branco" (Nederlandse taal)
http://www.melomusic.nl/cb_ain.htm

This page is in Dutch and there are links on that page to
articles about her in English, Portuguese, & Dutch. This
particular page has links to mp3s at the bottom. I'll try &
track down some more pages in English about the Fado. I find it
curious that Fado seems to have never been mentioned on any of
the tuning lists.

An upcoming New book on Mathematics and Music:

Assayag, G., ICRAM, Paris, France; Feichtinger, H.G., University
of Vienna, Austria; Rodrigues, J.F., University of Lisbon,
Portugal (Eds.)

"Mathematics and Music"
A Diderot Mathematical Forum

2002. Approx. 290 p. Hardcover
3-540-43727-4

Publication date: July 2002
Recommended Retail Price: EUR 64,95

If this insane link doesn't work, just do a search for "music"
on the Springer-Verlag site <http://www.springer.de/>:

http://www.springer.de/cgi/svcat/search_book.pl?isbn=3-540-43727-4&verity=
true&lastResult=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.springer.de%2Fsearch97cgi%2Fs97_cgi%3F%26action%3Dsearch%26collection%3Dcatalog_addition%26collection%3Dcatalog_metadata%26collection%3Dsite%26lang

Take a peek at the downloadable Table of Contents (PDF). Looks
promising.

The Rodrigues listed among the editors is José Francisco
Rodrigues, Director of the Centro de Matematica e Aplicacoes
Fundamentais and  Professor of Mathematics at the University of
Lisbon.

Rhythm has always intrigued me from the days I used to crash my
Yamaha QY-10, and I've put a few things on my (tentative)
reading list including this:

Mysterious Music: Rhythm and Free Verse - G. Burns Cooper
http://uk.cambridge.org/music/catalogue/0804729387/

"Though many recent poets insist on their poetry’s ‘musical’
qualities, few offer linguistically satisfying explanations of
that ‘music’. This book helps to fill that gap. It is a
linguistically-based study of rhythmic structures, and of the
nature of rhythm, in the free verse of T. S. Eliot, Robert
Lowell, and James Wright."

Oh, by the way, speaking of books... I just got this one from Amazon:

Erich Neuwirth
"Musical Temperaments" Springer 1997
ISBN 3-211-83040-5

Someone mentioned it here a day or two ago.

The text of this "book" is a skimpy 70 pages total! And the text is mostly
ho-hum tables of frequency relations. No matter how good the CD is, if you
can run it, 50 bucks for this book seems like a serious rip-off. I say "if
you can run it" because the CD uses MFC30.DLL and won't run on Windows XP;
probably needs Win 98 or earlier.

Just wanted to let everyone know my impression.

geesh. not even the diamond (Partch), much less CPS or any of Wilson's,
Chalmers absent, and this is just the older ones. more homework needed for
such a book. .

You're welcome. It's a beautiful sound. Fado is deserving of a lot more attention by musicologists & microtonalists I think.
