My friend Gary on the music by computer list found a microtonal gem - enjoy!

sforzando <http://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando/> is a Free SFZ
Player. Simple but Powerful For Advanced Users
Nicely done. This application is compiled for Windows and MAC and comes
standalone or as a plugin. (also for RTAS)
I tested the standalone version, quite nice and works well with SFZ files.
Limited testing on a temporary computer.

Chris, Monz - take note that not only can you edit the SFZ but the player
also has a tuning section where you can load .SCL files to adjust the scale
to any microtonal tuning.

sforzando is a free, highly SFZ <http://ariaengine.com/overview/sfz-format/>
2.0 compliant sample player. Advanced sample hobbyists now have a powerful
tool to experiment and share instruments *without* relying on proprietary
formats. sforzando only has one instrument slot; no fancy UI, effects or
mixers. Every tweak needs to be done at the SFZ file level, no cheating!

sforzando is also a name given for a sudden change in music dynamics which,
in musical notation, is represented by the sfz symbol.
Free As In Free Me From Proprietary Formats

The SFZ Format <http://ariaengine.com/overview/sfz-format/> is widely
accepted as *the* open standard to define the behavior of a musical
instrument from a bare set of sound recordings. Being a royalty-free
format, any developer can create, use and distribute SFZ files and players
for either free or commercial purposes.

So when looking for flexibility and portability, SFZ is the obvious choice.
Thats why its the default instrument file format for the ARIA Engine.
As a bonus, an integrated format converter should get you started!

You can also drop SF2, DLS and acidized WAV files directly on the
interface, and they will automatically get converted to SFZ 2.0, which you
can then edit and tweak to your liking!

Chris ...
Be sure to download the
soundpack<http://ariaengine.com/forums/index.php?p=/discussion/5783/free-sounds-for-aria-engine#Item_1>for
this one. There are some great instruments in here and each
instrument
comes with a complete set of individual controls for maximum enhancement.
These are all SFZ format files which can be altered to your detailed spec.
Very good example of how SFZ format files can be used to excellent
advantage. The plain text SFZ programs illustrate many ways to control all
aspects of sound production. Sforzando is used to best advantage by being
able to access these files as presets. As an example, the wah getarr
preset contains a huge set of guitar noises that can be made to enhance
most guitar pieces.
