I won't speak for Bill, as he apparantly has tools he likes and uses. As for me, don't assume that I *haven't* paid attention, though I don't currently remember us discussing this, except obbliquely. I'm always happy to know about tools, but of course time and resources are always at a premium, so I can't learn every one of them.

I'll take a look, but maybe you could help with something more specific than "Just get it off Miller's directory at UCSD"? I could do a search for pd, but I know that I also use a desktop utility called PowerDesk, and I *know* where the search engine hits are going to come...

Lastly: can I assume pd is still being developed (i.e. it's not an orphaned app) since you mention OS X?

Cheers,
Jon

Never mind, I found it...

OK, quick summary - pd, stands for 'pure data' -- transcendental
meta-instrument designer, genius doctor of mathematics and radical
punk musician Miller S. Puckette's (for whom MSP is named) latest work
of pure refined gorgeous genius -- what he did to follow his
world-shattering paradigm-shifting invention of MAX and FTS ('Faster
Than Sound', multiprocessing DSP kernel). But instead of working with
real-time MIDI and audio, pd expands to cover any kind of data you
like. Use it to process real-time stock quotes or weather patterns if
you like. Don't forget the 3D visualization plugin for it by (I think)
Mark Danks and spew out stock-generated animations and music of 4D
objects projected into 3D and rendered on a 2D display for
stereoscopic viewing with polarized lenses. Do score following and
algorithmic counterpoint to real-time whale songs. Or simply hack up
your own physical modelling synth using a object-oriented graphical
programming language descended from Smalltalk and Music V. This setup
has been used at UCSD and elsewhere to do amazing real-time
performance work. The development of pd was supported by a grant from
Intel Corp., as it pushes the limits of what can be done. Got a setup
with 16 Pentium IVs each runing at 2GHz? No problem, fts processes
audio as if you are running a 32Ghz processor. Extremely scalable.
Beautifully elegant code. Millelr is the world's GREATEST system
architect. And all of this can be yours for FREE.

Mac OS X has only been out a few months and pd is one of the first
audio apps to run on it! Amazingly portable code the likes of which
have nev

Don't Maxi-pads have wings?

since you guys are mentioning Miller and his awesome PD app,
just thought i'd pass along that a couple of years ago at UCSD
i saw a performance by my buddy Rand Steiger (composer) and his
wife Vibeka Sorenson (video artist) which used PD to have the
music and video interacting and changing each other in real-time.
it was really wild stuff.
