Harmonics 24 through 48 Inclusive as a 24 ET substitute.

The piece and scala file can be downloaded here
http://chrisvaisvil.com/?p=2344
(played online there too)

This tuning was tried out based on some ides of Denny Genovese. I really
enjoyed it and recommended it.

Hi Chris,
your piece is wonderful and scale very interesting.
I am puzzled, though, because of the 3's in the denominators.
Where do they come frome in a harmonic scale (apart from density)?
As a matter of fact, I get the same scale as yours by using Scala; using excel instead, putting integers 24 to 47 in column A, formula 1200*MOD(LOG(A1;2);1) in B1, copying and reordering terms, I get this one instead:

0
53.27294323
104.9554095
155.1396203
203.9100017
251.3440388
297.5130161
342.4826626

1088.268715
1145.035572
[2/1]

Well, probably I am making some mistakes, it is almost 2 am here...
Good night,
Claudi

Thanks for the kisten and comment!

All I did was use scala's harmonic series scale creation function. So I find it odd that something isodd if you know what I mean.

Yes, I meant something alike :-)
It looks like that Scala's ratios are built by dividing by the lowest harmonic you choose in the menu.
For instance, your scale is:
24/24
25/24
26/24=13/12
....
I realised this by using scala's harmonic series scale creation function from 24 to 25.
My scale was built using 24th to 47th harmonics of the fundamental "1" instead.
I'd say it's a matter of definitions.

Chris,
I enjoyed that piece so much; you don't often run across a scale that has so much variety in harmony and dissonance (if you know what I mean). The "harmonic" mood can be so varied even when the tempo of the playing is steady. It's like having an extra layer on the sound cake.  Fantastic.

I like it. How many of the notes did you use?

It's ironic that you call the scale "a 24 ET substitute", when 24 EDO is
itself a substitute for just intervals when it's considered as a
temperament, no? :) At any rate, I don't get some of the harshness from
this that I often get from 24 EDO. Whether that's psychological -- am I
expecting less harshness because I know it's a just scale? -- is another
question.

Jake

Thanks Jake!

Mmmm I'm guessing 75+% - but I recorded this directly in pianoteq (I'm
starting to do that a lot) and I'm pretty sure I saved the midi file
as well as the exported wav. I'd be glad to make that midi file
available - and also take a look at it.

I guess calling this a 24 et substitute is ironic indeed! The reason I
said that is because I've been thinking about 24 et a lot of late and
when I saw this "mode" of the harmonic series as Denny calls it I said
the same thing you are thinking - I bet is it sounds better than 24 et
because it is JI but hey - 24 notes! I think it does but yet has all
of the resources. And it seems to have little or none of the
downsides. I didn't run into the odd pattern asymmetry JI tends to
have. I think it may be "just right".

Erv had a subharmonic guitar tuned to this series

What comes to my mind is the 24 tone diaphonic cycle which is the last
one on the first page [appears in later pages also]
http://anaphoria.com/DiaphonicCycles.pdf

The straight harmonic series can get bit stuck having everything
pointing to one tonic
