Strings in 9/8 #10

This is a new piece for the string samples I made last month, with balloon drums, trombone, oboe, and shaker. It uses a scale based on the undertone series, then modulates that on the overtone series.

Amazingly natural sounding even though the tone spectrum is anything
but. You really have this area understood quite well. thanks~

Prent,

I like it! I went to your blog to see how you played or rendered it,
and I read about how you did the "pedal steel" effect. It sounds very
natural, very much like you might play a real instrument. Well done.
For me, it adds a sort of something -- stubbornness? -- to the piece.
The pedal steel effect forces you to pay attention to those chords,
which keeps them out of the background, but they're not melodic,
either. I guess they stay stubbornly in the midground during the whole
piece.

You comment on the blog that there's a little too much repetition. I
didn't mind the amount you had.

I didn't pay much attention to the tuning on this one; I just let it
play. The tuning didn't seem to call out for attention the way tunings
do in some pieces. It was pretty natural (though I don't know if I
would have thought 11/8 and 13/8 were "natural" a year ago), so I just
let the various instruments play among themselves in my head, and
found that quite enjoyable.

The modulations (or whatever) at about 2:30 and 4:10 sound pretty cool
-- like some insistent instigator is agitating for change, getting
some, and then getting back to the status quo. Or something. :)

Regards,
Jake

Hi Prent,

So far I like this best of what you've shared. I especially like the chord
progression at 1:00 or so.

The piece is excellent - I need to ask - is this generative? If so I'm
really blown away.

Chris, Kraig, Jake, and others,
Thanks for listening. I appreciate the feedback. To Chris' question, the pieces use indeterminacy. They could be considered "generative" in the sense that I set up the process and then the randomization takes over. Each instrument has a number of choice for what to play at any given minute. Each note in a melody could be one note or another, have different rhythms, or it may have a slide or a trill applied to it. But the choices are highly constrained. Chords can be any of several inversions, or might slide or trill from one set of defined chords to another. In this case, the chords are mostly 6:4, 6:5, 6:5 moving to 12:7, 12:9, 12:11. Each glide moves just the right distance to hit the next note in the chord.

I make 3 versions and then go for a walk and listen to them. I return and make some changes to the sound levels, or delete something that doesn't work, or add something new. Then I make 3 more versions and go for another walk. So that's a process of sorts. Keeps my heart working well, which ain't half bad.

That is very impressive for being generative. that i didn't guess.
