new piece: Chords with Figuration (Stage 2)

🔗calebmrgn <calebmrgn@...>

1/5/2012 4:15:26 PM

Same tuning: 87EDO subset, not really sounding very microtonal here. Retuning of EXS24 instruments with Lil' Miss Scale Oven. (Yay.)

Logic, with some use of Audacity plug-in.

Slow chords are overlayed with nervous ostinatos. Since I don't love ostinatos particularly, it's been a challenge to try to learn how to use them. This is stage 2. I'm trying to put this piece together like a piece of IKEA furniture, or something.

If this piece works, it might be because of texural and registral changes, and some cross-rhythms.

I hope to complete a stage 3, which will have added material within this framework--maybe interruptions and departures.

Mp3 and .aif here: http://www.box.com/files/0/f/17990454#/files/0/f/58780739/1/f_1394907929

(As well as many recent sketches available in the same folder--see toward top of page)

Caleb, this service requires membership, as was the case in the past to my recollection. Why not use some feasible free webcorner for your material to share instead of one that prompts membership all the time?

As per Dr. Oz's suggestion I put up this community site at the request of
Jacob Barton so that xenharmonic composers may freely share their music
without too much trouble.
Consider it an extension of untweleve's community outreach. Main
requirement is that you must have the rights to post the material as per US
copyright law since it is host in the USA.

http://soonlabel.com/xenharmonic/archives/277#comments
or plainly
http://soonlabel.com/xenharmonic/

If you like what you see message me off list and I will set you up with an
account and a tutorial.

Thanks to Mike, Chris, Prent, and Kraig for kind comments.  It's very reassuring that other composers get some enjoyment out of this.
It never ceases to surprise me how music somehow emerges from combinations of elements.  The method matters, but almost any method will work.  This reminds me of a little quote from de Kooning.  Not sure if it's entirely true -- or that I know exactly what he means -- but it makes me wonder...
In art, one idea is as good as another. If one takes the idea of trembling, for instance, all of a sudden most art starts to tremble. Michelangelo starts to tremble. El Greco starts to tremble. All the Impressionists start to tremble. (Willem de Kooning)
