Joe Monzo - Invisible Haircut

🔗Mike Battaglia <battaglia01@...>

I'm pretty sure Joe Monzo isn't even around, but Kalle posted this on
tuning and this little example blew my mind, so here you go:

http://sonic-arts.org/monzo/haircut/inv-excp.mid

For jazz guys: apparently 13/8 is the way to go for b13 chords, and
19/16 is the way to go for #9 chords, so if you're trying to play
something like Bb D Ab Db Gb, 8:10:14:19:26 works really well. Who'd
have thought?

Mike, do you have any idea if it would be ok for me to render it with some
of the sample sets I have and post it under his name?

I am thinking its likely ok since you are distributing the midi file.

I"ve not listened to this midi yet. Its been a busy day. However, it will
probably be easy for me to do.

Thanks,

Chris

The link is to Sonic Arts, not Mike's site. Why not e-mail
Joe and ask him? I expect he'd agree. -Carl

Carl,

I didn't know about this site - a lot of history in this one.

Thanks,

Chris

Yes! For years, Sonic Arts published Pitch magazine. They
helped support Ivor Darreg, and many other microtonalists have
recorded there over the decades. All or most of Ivor's writings
are on the site.

Well, I found an mp3 of invisible haircut there that is much better than my
midi system.

I meant the midi packaged with HP and vista 64.

Let me load it up in Garritan or Kontakt and take a listen.

You know, knowing Joe the bit that I do, having hung out with him here in SD, and remembering when he brought this piece around...

... I just know he'd get a big kick out of all the attention his 'haircut' is getting!

Just saw this now -- it's not correct. _Pitch_ was published by Johnny Reinhard and/or the AFMM (American Festival of Microtonal Music).

The journal associated with Sonic Arts is _Interval_, published during the late 1970s and 1980s by Jonathan Glasier, who is the proprietor of Sonic Arts Gallery in San Diego.

Almost all of Ivor Darreg's writings are available on the website:
http://sonic-arts.org/darreg/

but a big caveat: none of the graphics are available ... so when you read about a musical notation, you will not be able to see what it looks like. Sorry about that, but nothing I can do about it.

Ack, thanks monz, I always get those two mixed up. I have several
print issues of both - they are both excellent. -Carl

I ran to play that on my Tonal Plexus, and I agree, it sounds lush! The standard 12tet version sounds harsh and grey in comparison.

Ben Johnston has made string quartet arrangements of jazz standards in extended JI, and apparently he makes use of chords similar to that one. I haven't heard those pieces nor seen the scores but some of his other pieces, such as the 10th Quartet, offer glimpses of jazz harmony.
