The World has Changed

As some of you know I received my 19 note per octave Ibanez from Brad Smith and I promptly wrote this song using it. Everything you hear guitar-wise is the 19 edo – I used Absynth 5 for the bass and added some vocals and samples of a Japanese man talking angrily. The French Horn is from Peter Thoegersen's "Sit Up and Sit Down!" as performed in Urbana on 4/21/2011. The text is from an interview with a Japanese woman after the 3/11/2011 earthquake and tsunami that struck me as an unusual observation:

Matsuko Ito, who has been living in a shelter in the small northeastern city of Natori since the tsunami, said there's no getting used to the terror of being awoken by shaking.

She said she started screaming when the quake struck around 11:30 p.m.

"It's enough," the 64-year-old while smoking a cigarette outside. "Something has changed. The world feels strange now. Even the way the clouds move isn't right."

In Ichinoseki, lines formed outside a supermarket when it opened Friday morning. An employee with a flashlight escorted each customer around the store and jotted the price of each selected item in a pad.

"Something has changed. The world feels strange now. Even the way the clouds move isn't right."

Nice! I see you're exploring some extended meantone stuff. You should
try messing around with negri next, I think you might like it. Negri
generates the following 9 note scale, in 19-tet notation

C Db D# E F G Ab A# B C

Or

2 2 2 2 3 2 2 2 2

So it splits the fourth into 5 equal parts. You can play some pretty
wild stuff in it, check Igs' latest post for an example of that.

Good to see you went the 19-equal route! When this one gets boring, I
strongly suggest 15-equal next, which will endow you with the ability
to cure disease and prevent world war.

I don't understand why you are saying this is extended meantone - not that I
really understand the implications of what you are saying.

The fact is the piece highly chromatic and certainly not anything you could
play in 12 (accurately).

So, could you explain because I am confused.

The piece was very highly chromatic, but at one point I thought I
heard you shredding some pentatonics over it. Since pentatonic scales
in 19-tet are 5 notes of meantone, I thought that was a cue that you
were thinking in terms of 19-tet extended meantone harmony. Perhaps
that isn't how you were thinking about it after all.

Here's a new piece, for Logic Pro 8.

http://www.box.net/files/0/f/17990454/Composer_Caleb_Morgan_Advocates_for_Audio_Surveillance#/files/0/f/58780739/Newer_Sketches_&_Trial_Balloons

About 6 minutes.

If it's an achievement, it's mainly because it uses a microtonal tuning (heard
more later on in the piece) and attempts some self-similar generation
techniques, and it grapples with the hated Logic Pro 8 -- in which nothing works
the way it oughtta.

Lighter, but that's ok.

Caleb

(If you hate it, don't tell me. I'm just glad to be writing something, again.)

Sorry, folks, I'll fix the problem. It gets confusing.

http://www.box.net/shared/5dygo2jon4 should get you to the piece

http://www.box.net/files/0/f/17990454/Composer_Caleb_Morgan_Advocates_for_Audio_Surveillance

should get you to the entire contents of my stuff. Feel free to plunder.

There should be folders with all my stuff -- mp3's, .aif's, some apps, tunings,

The idea is that it's all available for whoever wants to do whatever with it.

Lemme know if I've screwed up the link, again!

Thank you, that means a lot to me, coming from you.

I'm still learning how to do some basic things with Logic. Today I had to read
the manual for a half-hour (!) to figure out how to do simple 50% quantization
-- just tightening up the rhythmic feel a little, not all the way quantized.
They make it more complicated than any other sequencing software I've ever used
(Performer, Studio Vision, Synclavier).

http://www.box.net/shared/m37jhti1og

I'd like to know: This link should get you to the level in my box with a bunch
of folders. Then you should be able to click on any folder and listen or
download whatever you want.

Is this link not working?

Don't know what tiny url is.

I don't know how (or why) I should search Carl's posts.

If you don't know what piece I'm talking about, you can say that.

As I said, perhaps I'm confused about which piece it was.

You post many pieces, I'm going to listen to *some* of them and comment on the
ones I *like*.

*However, you shouldn't interpret my failure to comment as my not liking
something.*

Maybe I was just busy doing something else, etc. etc.

Let's not let the Internet Snark get in the way of my listening. I'm going to
keep listening to your stuff, and when I hear something I like, I'll say so.

I'm not going to listen to four versions of a piece and compare tunings -- the
reason being that it's unlikely to be either a worthwhile experiment (too many
random factors) and it's not so much fun, either.

You post so much stuff that you'll have to be patient with people who are
confused about which piece was what.

I'd like to listen to a piece I think was yours: Perhaps I was mistaken.

It involved some found sound, some recorded voice.

Don't bother with one-word replies, like this.

Wait 'til you get back to a computer with a keyboard, and can give a valid
response some attention.

I'll continue to listen to your music, and comment on the stuff I like.

Instead of reading for tone, I suggest reading literally.

I'm asking you if you wrote a piece recently that Carl responded to with "I
really like this!" or words to that effect.

I would like to listen to that piece.

Let me try to sort this out.

Internet misunderstandings are common. In fact, in the past you mistook me for
someone else, and were angry, you thought, at me. It was a misunderstanding,
and you apologized. In fact, you were angry at someone else.

Now, I'm not pressuring you to answer quickly.

Also, I'm not a member of the tuning list, where we had that misunderstanding.

I de-subscribed some time ago.

The only reason I sound obstinate, here, is because once I become curious about
something, I tend to persist.

The goal of this persistence is not to pressure you.

It's simply to have the question answered.

Carl has good ears. If he liked something, it's worth listening to.

I'm desperately trying to avoid too much meta-cognitive debate, or debates about
manners, when I'm simply interested in hearing a piece of yours, if you wrote
it.

Cold, perhaps. Self-interested? Absolutely. I might learn something about
music from that piece that Carl liked.

We're not friends, nor are we adversaries. We're composers with some common
interests, and somewhat overlapping tastes.

I'll probably regret saying what I said, above.

If you'd like me to explain any particular remark, and why I said it, feel free
to ask.

There's just too much stuff to hear without having some idea in advance whether
it's likely to be good.

It's not about who's busier.

I see misunderstandings and squabbles all the time on the site where I hang out,
and so, charmless or not, I'm avoiding that.

Put your "Spock" hat on, for a second, and just satisfy my curiosity.

Excellent, the best possible outcome! :) BTW, I think when people were talking about "searching Carl's posts", most were probably meaning to bring up the MMM group on the web interface and search through the archived messages there. (It is sounding like you still deal with MMM in true mail-list form).

Anyway, your search through Google worked as well, so good for everyone!
