A Little Canon

Inspired by Cris Foster's book Musical Mathematics I built a little canon today. It was built very cheaply. A wine box from Chile, 3/4" aluminum angle stock, $1 piece of hard wood, 9 zither pins @ $ 0.28 each from Experimental Musical Instruments, 9 electric guitar strings - all low E 0.046 dia. and a $2 (or less?) bag of 1" angle brackets.

The angle brackets need to be a bit bigger.

So far I've pretty much just built it and played it in unison for a drone fest on improvfriday.

You can see the pictures (use your back button) and listen to the mp3 here:

When I was working with Harry and playing with the Partch Ensemble, the canons were always my favorite instrument. They seemed like such a blank slate, a whole field of open strings waiting for a set of bridges to come along. Partch had lots of bridges that he made, often coming up with completely different setups for different pieces. It was fascinating to set up a new set of custom bridges he had done, tuned up the rations, and then marvel at the melodic and harmonic resources that were available right in front of you.

In a way, an awful lot of what you want in an instrument: expressive, visceral, demonstrative of it's ingredients (it is so cool to be strumming the strings, looking at the bridge placement, and listen to how it comes together...

Best of fortune as you expand your materials, Chris!

Chris, you are an energetic and resourceful guy, wow!

This is inspiring me to want to do the same, and ultimately, have a small
'orchestra' of instruments for communal music-making events on the future
UnTwelve calendar. I love to chat with you offlist about this...perhaps you
can consult and/or be directly involved in organizing such events with us.

Best,
AKJ

Aaron,

I'm very interested in this idea and lets talk.
I wonder if anyone else is in the Muncie, Indianapolis area?
