xen/micro evangelism on Facebook

πŸ”—manuphonic <manuphonic@...>

Having only joined Facebook recently & reconnected with many distant friends there, I now find one of my favorite activities in that forum is to share links to xentonal / microtonal / xenharmonic music, much of which strikes my friends as fresh, startling & impressive.

Given that xen/micro metatunings are compatible with every musical genre, style & agenda that anyone can conceive, evangelizing for plenitonality is decidedly odd, like advertising a whole galaxy as a tourist destination. Yet the social rewards for sharing the links I've shared are so juicy & so much fun that I'm plowing ahead anyway.

So far I've shared audio & video from artists that range from Chris Vaisvil to Aaron Krister Johnson, from Carlo Serafini to Monroe Golden, from Ozan Yarman to Dante Rosati, from Harry Partch to Igliashon Jones. I've linked to stuff about instruments by Dave Keenan, Jon Catler & Ron Sword; no doubt various hex-grid keyboards, the Continuum Fingerboard, the Tonal Plexus & some Vertical Keyboards will follow. I've linked to Untwelve contest entries & to the Split Notes compilation *Crack My Pitch Up*. Reactions vary but I can say a splash is being made.

Please help me by recommending your favorite xen/micro links, old or new, since I intend to keep posting several per week on Facebook. Don't be shy about recommending your own stuff. Don't be shy about recommending really, really old stuff either.

I'd especially like to identify the best audio & video clips by xen/micro artists I haven't mentioned above, whether prolific media producers like Elaine Walker, figures rarely recorded in extant media like Ivor Darreg, or pioneers whose archives are only slowly appearing online like Adriaan Fokker. Feel free to suggest anyone or anything you wouldn't want me to omit.

Thanks!

5. Lois V. Vierk, esp. "River Beneath the River" ((closest i can find: http://vimeo.com/11179946))
6. Robert Hasegawa "Chaconne for James Tenney" ((http://www.roberthasegawa.com/))

Hello Mark,

Thank you so much for considering my music worthy of being passed along. I
really appreciate it.
A suggestion for you would be to share the Charles Ives quartertone piano
pieces if you haven't done that already.

I don't see a lot of responses to this, so I think I'll give this:

Chromosounds has been getting a lot of attention of late, something which seems to happen from time to time.

What really got me into microtones was Easley Blackwood's microtonal etudes 13-24-tet, Wendy Carlos' "Beauty in the Beast", Randy Winchester's "Five Hemispheres" which is SICK, and Elaine Walker's tunes.

Maybe this will work for others too. Keep evangelising bro!

Don't stop now, but I thank all of you for providing such wonderful links. Lots of 'em are new to me so I'm having great fun hearing them out.

Can you suggest favorites among Elaine Walker's videos? Or other Bohlen-Pierce music?

Thanks again!

Gene, this is terrific! Anything you can illuminate about the step size tricks it plays, the tension-resolution tricks, wow! I shared this & it got positive responses. One friend connected it with the spectralist school, which opened a door for me since I'd never before heard those composers. For some reason "Contrasts" also comes to mind:
