Mother Dropped 11 Nuts

Norm Harris provided his 12/8 percussion track Mother Nut Drop for me to experiment with since it is an example of a cross-over rhythm. To that track I added 5 tracks of my homemade DIY 11-edo stick (eleven notes per octave instead of twelve) with some bridge modification.. Each stick track was run through guitar rig 4. I left Norm's track alone because it was perfect as is.

I like it, it's "down lowwwwww and dirty". Kinda loose but in a way that
works. Xeharmonic Santana graffiti music.

Might be a good idea to start not naming pieces by putting the the edo
number in the title, though? ;)

Thank you for the listen and comment! Would I be correct in thinking you are
curious if people can determining the tuning? I promised Norm a version with
my 5 string bass - so the next one will be in 12 equal. But after that I
want to try to marry his up with an orchestra. It sounds like a challenge
with a possibly interesting outcome.

Back to this piece - Encouraged with my experience building and playing my
11 edo stick I have placed an order for a fret saw and fret wire. I've
rummaged through a local music store junk box and got some stuff for cheap.
I intend to make a more serious version in the near future - tuning
undetermined at the moment. I've learned a lot from building the 11edo stick
and I have a set of 8 strings for steel pedal guitar that is really
intriguing to use for another stick instrument.

That, but mostly, I think it gets kind of cheezy to keep naming things after
the EDO numbers! :) :D

Well, it is a step beyond when I was just using the date and piece
number for that day.
Ask Carl :-)

Just come up with names like "Hairy Apples Gordon" or "twiddlybanks of
mwirthingam jebellocks" or something. Easy!

I love your new titles, images, stories, etc. Don't change
a thing! Also, have you considered going over your stuff from
the past year and putting together an album of your favs?

I haven't thought of a retrospective album but that sounds like a
really good idea.

I'd be tempted to group a set of albums in categories like:

solo instruments
orchestral / electronic equivalent to such
pseudo rock band
and ambient.

I probably have enough for each category if I go back a couple years.

For tapping I recommend the biggest fretwire you can find, also helps you dig in for bends ...

http://www.allparts.com/Jumbo-Fret-Wire-p/LT-0877-000.htm

It's a delicious 4.33 by 2.59mm.

Well, actually, the titles usually have a meaning, at least privately to me,
if not obviously something public.
I'm not a fan of random titles.

I went with Experimental Musical Instruments who seem to have reasonable prices.
I bought the fret saw and about 10' of medium wire from them.

(crown width: .080", crown height: .043") Which is 2.03 by 1.09 mm

http://windworld.com/products-page/hardware-for-acoustic/fret-wire/

Your size wire is almost like a scalloped fret board!!

So.... a Chapman stick or guitar played like one uses high frets?
Then.... my 1/4" dowels ought to work as well.

I would be tempted to buy a single album with 10 of your
best tracks in all categories.

I'm much in favor of titles which refer in some way to the tuning.

Yeah a good alternative to scalloping! :)

Chapman Stick has THE most beautiful triangular steel frets:

http://www.stick.com/instruments/frets/rails/

Well I'm tapping a bass with medium frets, because I'm also using thin plain strings, when I tap them my fingertip contacts the board, taking energy out of my tap. Doesn't feel right. However with high frets there's more chance of the note going sharp due to too much finger pressure. Large frets 'spread the load' of the tap impact, are more massive and resilient to the constant striking. The original Chapman frets were huge rods sunk deep into the board, see this photo:

I'm just back from Baku, having attended the II. International Mugam
Festival & Symposium as an invited participant and as jury member of the
II. International Mugam Contest. Lot's of news to tell as you might guess.

After sifting through 400 mails, I found and listened to 11-EDO pieces
by you, Chris, on your new instrument and I liked them! There were a few
others again by you, which were nice also. I thought I caught some Saba
flavours in the opening bars of "17 Years in the 60s"!

More later from the great and terrible,
Dr. Oz.
