The Hidden Temple of Empathica III mp3 @ MicroSoonLabel

Chris has hosted the mp3 file of my new piece in 12 of 52et.

About 8 1/2 minutes length, for those with time to burn. The first third
is atmospheric, with tone clusters; the remainder of the work is a
sinuous dance in 13/4 meter which explores a 6-pitch scale.

Could you fill us in on "why 52?"

I finally got a chance to listen. This is great - I especially like 3'00''
and beyond. The transition at 3 ' is superb.

Well...happenstance, mostly.

It happened that I was looking at 52et after working on "Nigel-38"; it
also happened that I wanted -- for "Empathica III" -- a hexitonic scale
built from unequal steps (gamelans & gagaku were on my mind). Right
under my nose, 52et happened to have some very nice variants in small &
large tones. I selected 10 pitches for 2 scales:

!
138.46200
276.92300
415.83500
553.84600
692.30800
830.76900
969.23100
1107.69200
1200.00000

!
138.46200
276.92300
623.07700
830.76900
969.23100
1200.00000

I added pitches 2 & 9 to round the pitch set to twelve:

12-tone of 52et Hidden Temple, jls
12
!
138.46200
184.61500
276.92300
415.83500
553.84600
623.07700
692.30800
830.76900
876.92300
969.23100
1107.69200
1200.00000

Pitches from the 1st scale formed most of the tone clusters at the
beginning of "Hidden Temple"; the 2nd hexitonic scale comprises
practically the entire tonal matter of the dance sequence.

This looks really interesting, but I haven't had a chance to listen
yet....perhaps tonight, and I'll give you my full report when it happens.
I've never studied what happens at 52-edo, I'm more familiar with 53, of
course, but it's interesting that 52 = 2^2 * 13, so there's a flavor of
13-edo in its architecture, which guarantees exotic resources, but also, the
number of pitches per octave insures a density that will also give familiar
resources as well. So again, interesting stuff....
