Here's some music I've been checking out lately, good stuff...Munir Bashir, "Mesopotamia..." legendary oud maestro, one of the all time greats...Zhao Jiazhen, "Masterpieces of the Chinese Qin from the Tang Dynasty to Today..." deep stuff, featuring one of the oldest written pieces yet found...and it sounds really modern, sorta weird..."To Scratch Your Heart; Early Recordings from Istanbul..." a lot of variety here, a snapshot of Turkish music from 100 years ago..."Al-Tarab, Muscat Oud Festival..." a 4 CD set of oud maestros from all over the Middle East/N. Africa, with a great booklet, featuring detailed profiles of the artists, and a list of the maqamat/scales used...Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba, "I Speak Fula..." Killer African music, featuring 4 Ngonis...it's amazing how they get so many notes out of such a teensy fretless neck...and amazing rhythms...

The Devil's Anvil, "Hard Rock From the Middle East..." from 1967, an early mix of rock with Arabic, Greek, and Turkish concepts...totally uncontrived, still one of my favorite albums...this is where I first heard the oud and Arabic singing, at the age of 16...and last but not least, Sando Szabo's "Modern Hungarian Maqam" is a beautiful CD; he's a great guitarist, and his research into early Hungarian maqam ideas is really interesting. I get lots of ideas for my own compositions from listening to music from all over the world...and of course these are cultures who have used non 12 tunings for thousands of years...best...Stickman www.microstick.net
