Um...is there any way to make a rule that folks have to use their real names here? There are some real cheesedicks saying mighty offensive stuff, and they're not even man enough to say who they are...it oughta stop, don't you think? Best...Hstick

Though I'm not sure any moderator could take action, we as a community
could just decide not to respond to those who are using psuedonyms,
except with explanations that because of recent problems on the list
we expect people to be open about who they actually are. I dunno =/

Could you point us to these "mighty offensive things"? I haven't seen any, except for calling Marcel mentally ill.

As far as anonymity, I haven't noticed that either. My true name is right here:

/makemicromusic/files/Lobawad/

spelled out in a language that brooks no masks. Go ahead, work up the gumption to actually listen to it.

Would you like to publicly state that a person's music is an insufficient "name"?

Would you like to state for posterity that this piece does not
demonstrate that the person it names has something of value to
say about microtonal music?

You must not have seen what was written about Daniel Forro.

I assumed that that was a joke, meant to imply precisely the opposite of what was stated (it is utterly obvious to anyone not in need of a cephalorectomy that Daniel commands his material).

But that crack, satirical or serious, was not made "anonymously". The poster posted their own music, clearly displaying incomptence in compositional matters. That's more than a "name", it's like a name, mugshot, and CV.

As far as names and spam: a superb musician performed in my festival this year, not last year (and for less money than I had to offer previously) because our correspondence was buried for ages in the goo of the Internet. This SUCKS. And he gave me the good word in some... good stuff, connections etc. a few days ago, which really brought the gaff home.

I'm not going to use my word name on the Internet anymore. I don't need penis enlargers, thanks, even if I could find the dang thing....
anyone can get my word name with a simple email. And it shouldn't be necessary: Content, content content! Not "source"

Obviously, it is not possible to force real names. It's the easiest thing in the world to invent a name that _looks_ like a real name, and no way to find out.

But what is possible is to proceed against offensive content. This is the job for moderators. Meanwhile I would support the banning of group members that have been proven to be unteachable repeating offenders.

Don't tell that to Quora.

Fourthed (Jon and Oz also agree). Moderators?

I was going to start a poll for this, but apparently polls are
not enabled for this list. -Carl

There is a file called 11equalRasperryVelvet.mp3 in it. Gene, Carl and Ozan have listened to it... yes it is downloading now just fine.

I found it. My web browser (Chrome) could not find it. Internet Explorer did.

See Prent's note below, and the quotes from lobawad.

For what it's worth... I wonder if we have a communication problem here. I found the MP3 file of Raspberry Velvet. What I did not find is any contents in the "profile" of lobawad, and I thought the profile is what lobawad refers to in saying "my true identity is right here"... The profile is either inaccessible or hidden, so... what's up with that? I was expecting to see some identification there... ;-)

Pseudonyms and nicknames don't really bother me, unless they're used to hide childish or disruptive behavior.

I think he means that regular listeners to the music which gets put up here will recognize who he is by the style.
