Hey all, just thought everyone should know that Jacky Ligon just put out a new EP, which can be found here:

http://www.xen-arts.com/2011/02/xen-arts-ep-release-jacky-ligon-other.html

It's the bee's knees, the cat's meow, the...stork's trenchcoat? I dunno, it's early, I'm tired, but this is a great EP. And speaking of production values, this is top-notch. It's very dubstep and ever so slightly glitchy, I would not be surprised at all if somebody's *cough*Michael*cough* DJ friends got all over this.

Ha well...no surprise I'm happy about this.
I love Jacky Ligon's work. His entry "Seven Diamonds" to Sevish's "Crack My Pitch Up" compilation was also by-and-large my favorite on the album (as well as Sevish's favorite, I believe).

And I like these songs just as much. Not because the production is superb, that it's loaded with layers, or that it's dance-able electronic.

But, rather, because the combination of moods/scales/listenability is very very white label and appears to represent true intelligent underground electronica and not the type of corny dance hits people usually stereotype "techno" as.

It's abstract, intelligent, incredibly musical, glitchy yet smooth, loaded with abstract breakbeats and not 4-on-the-floor beats, loaded with odd chords that manage to sound surprisingly confident together.  It's the kind of thing classically trained electronica pioneer BT would make...in fact I'm convinced you could pitch Jacky Ligon's work to a DJ or virtually anyone in the electronica scene as a new 12TET song from BT and they would believe you!

Igs>"I would not be surprised at all if somebody's *cough*Michael*cough* DJ friends got all over this."

Ha, you may think it's funny, but indeed I'd be very confident to showcase this to anyone anywhere as a hallmark of what microtonal music can become in good hands: inside or outside the DJ/"live electronica" scene (yes, I'd also be happy to show it to rock/jazz/etc. musicians).
Sure the production helps, but as with (gasp?!) the Beatles...what really catches me about this music that makes it so fresh is not the production clarity, but the amount of tonal color and imagination in the chords/scales/arrangement: you can listen to it several times and it is so vast feeling it's never quite the same thing twice.

Thanks for letting us know.

Hm, using megaupload? Tacky. He should be on Split Notes
if bandwidth is that much of a problem.

Other Time is a fantastic EP, and is exciting not just because it's xenharmonic - the sound designs, the rhythms, the sense of vastness and sparseness, are all great. The songs are thoughtful and delicate. I'm really happy. (plus I've been waiting for Jacky to share some new music with us for ages :))))

Now all of us here working in the realm of microtonal electronic music need to step up our game! ;)

Oh and check this review of Other Time on the DUBBHISM blog... http://www.dubbhism.com/2011/02/xenharmonic-bass-hi-tech-dubs-from.html

Exciting times.

Thanks for posting notice. Beyond the tunings, beyond the construction, beyond the attention to production values, Jacky's work highlights a very basic concept: great music comes from great musicians.

Jacky has always been an inspiration to me, which is one of the reasons I started MMM with him. In his own quiet way, he keeps adding wonderful music to the universe.

We're lucky to have him.

Thanks for bringing Jacky's latest release to my attention. The few samples
of Jacky's work I've heard through the years were always interesting and
definitely show someone with sensitive ears who really understands and cares
about getting rich attractive sounds out of his setup. It appears he even
codes his own synths; from the looks of it, he has a VSTi 4-operator synth
avalable for download.

Also, it is apparent from the archives that he is a unique thinker about
tuning and scales; a lot of his work seems (to my knowledge) to favor
rational intonation.

I wish there were more information on his site about the tunings used on the
latest EP.

I finally could download and listen. Jacky Ligon's newest production is
awesome. It definitely would suit a sci-fi documentary on black holes or
suchlike paranormal cosmic activities.
