Kontakt 2 and Scala files?

🔗John Moriarty <JlMoriart@...>

Hi all, I'm working with one of my music professors on using his setup
(basically Kontakt 2 and a midi keyboard) to play alternative tunings
and their MOS scales. The native tuning capabilities of Kontakt are
limited to 12-note octave repeating scales, where each note can only
be tuned 50-cents in either direction.

He swears he read somewhere that, in addition to its
12-note-50-cents-in-either-direction tuning capability, Kontakt could
also load scala files. I can't find out how though, does anyone have
experience with Kontakt and know if that is a possibility? If so, how
is it done?

I was reading up on Lil Miss Scale Oven and it says it can return
Kontakt on its own which is interesting, does someone know how that
would work as well?

Thanks for your help,

John M

Version 3 through 4 give you native support for larger than 12 edos.
Not sure about 2 because I never owned the full version 2.

On a PC this works
http://www.12equalboresme.com/index.html

Perhaps if you used a PC to generate the script and used the script on the
MAC install of Kontakt 2 that would work.

I'll email you a script.

I have Kontakt 2.

Use Scala2Kontakt Microtuner found on www.12equalboresme.com . On Windows i generate Scala files and import them to my MAC. Copy the text (converted scala file) in to the script window, press apply and it works. You are not limited to 12-equal/50 cents. Not all scala files work, but a lot of them. For example: Wilson 31-tEt worked and was used on one of my songs (http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/wA1dTQaXWygWWTjgu-tmhLrQlDGlaIklVqdqJ5gBjc7QuFvnyORk6GkJC9Qhyt2oAXnmpVOznV43EG1YzULQOXjpQODcxhWgK0pKpg/Raed%27s%20music/A%20hint%20from%20those%20who%20passed%20away%20.mp3)
If you need more info, just mail me.

Greetings,

Raed

Yes Carl, I stand accused and guilty of not contributing microtonally to
this forum.

Perhaps I should make a monthly list of the music I've posted like you have
of your (on topic) posts.

Scala2Kontakt works great for me, too. Never had a problem with a .scl file, interesting- does failure to read a .scl file properly happen with huge tunings, tiny tunings, non-octave periods, or some other less usual thing, or does it happen "randomly"?

Thanks for all the support! Unfortunately I misunderstood, and he
actually has *Kontakt 4*. Does that change any of the advice that's
been given?

Thanks again,

John

my advice was specifically about versions 3 and 4.

Thanks again for the help everyone. We're on macs but I have a Windows partition so I should be able to use Scala2Kontakt there. If it isn't already obvious, I'm coming from a complete lack of experience with Kontakt and I just need to report back with something that my professor (who does know Kontakt) will understand.

Summary:
Using scripts we can use Kontakt's native tuning capability. Scala2Kontakt reads Scala files and converts them into the script I'll need. Is that right?

?Hi John,

Scala2Kontakt is not required to export Scala scales to Kontakt.
It provides additional functionality (mainly switching scales during performance), but you may not need this.
Scala exports Kontakt tuning scripts for single scales on it's own perfectly fine.

Ah! My ignorance strikes again. I downloaded scala forever ago but
never got very familiar with it to realize it had the capability
already. Looking at Scala again, I *should* be able to load a scale,
set the synth model to "129: Native Instruments Kontakt 2, via script
file", and then click send?

IF that's the case, I am getting an error message from Scala that says
"Interval file /Applications/Scala/Scala2.app/Contents/Resources/scala22/./intnam.par
not found"
whenever I try to set that (or any other) synth model. Should I
contact Manuel Op de Coul about that or has anyone has any similar
problems?

Thanks for your continued tolerance,

John
