Kid's Garage Band in 17 equal

Hey, I did something for ImprovFriday I wanted to share.

I ran a couple tracks of my 17 equal electric through my Marshall amp against some drums loops and then did some fretless bass to round it out.

Nothing profound but it would be nice to see an actual highschool garage band in 17 equal someday.

Cool. Aw'some. That's the kind of hands-on microtonality the
next-generation of American garage band and prom night music enthusiasts
should tackle! Seriously. :)

If they did that, the typical garage style would tend to obscure the difference between 12 and 17 unless they did some things to make it more obvious.

Would obscuring the difference between 12 and 17 be a problem?

I don't see it as such. The likelihood of the entire western world
embracing any microtonal tuning as a *replacement* to 12 equal I feel
is slim to none.

My personal opinion is that it is a reasonable premise to continue
the practice of *extending* 12 with microtonality. I see no reason to
eliminate 12 equal.

Just about the closest thing to "extending 12TET (specifically the diatonic
scale) with microtonallity" involves placing neutral thirds and neutral sevenths
between major and minor thirds and sevenths. Which is exactly what the 9-tone
version of the Dimension scale is and much like what blues and some Middle
Eastern scales have done for ages.
But...I doubt it's the only way to get things to fit for most people...just,
perhaps, the most obvious one.

Do I think something can flat out replace 12TET? Of course not, but can it
serve as an equally popular alternative?...you'd better believe it! For
example, serve up virtually ANY of Sevish's tracks to a drum and bass enthusiast
or any dance music fan a Marcus Satellite's "Way Above Way Beyond" or any
industrial fanatic some of Igs's tracks and I doubt any will notice the
so-called "weakness in tuning vs. 12TET". Double dare you... At least in
electronic music, there is already some traction far as people who've made
easily accessible enough tracks to "fool" the community into viewing them on
equal ground with the best 12TET electronica. Same goes with blues IE Neil
Haverstick's music...then again blues already has some microtonal aspects.
Blackwood, 31TET, 17TET, 19TET, some of Wilson's MOS scales IE "Hexanies" seem
to have a strong advantage in this arena.

The places I think not-so-immediately-open to microtonality are, ironically

A) Classical music, which is still very often stuck toward only very old
classical music IE from Bach's era.

B) Acoustic music not related to cultures with microtones in their music, where
playing talent and formality are often key and often
guitarists/keyboardists...who play live look at a microtonal layout and go "what
the....too complicated!".

...the same ones so stressed on this list (sometimes...almost)

Hey Chris,

This caused a big grin on my face, in a very good way! Short but sweet &
made my day, bro.

Seventeen-ET and electric guitars *do* seem made for each other...

Best,
jls

Nice, it would be pretty cool if you could get that up on Rock Band Network. I wonder if they've ever had any microtonal submissions before?
