Conventionally fretted 6 string electric bass guitar tuned in fifths. Ebow. Guitar tuner with cents readout. Boss RC-50 loop station. Sound treatments by Boss BR-600 digital multitracker.

'Septimal Heaven' non-octave Just Intonation scale, created by X.J.Scott (see www.nonoctave.com).

Frequency / Cents
7/3 .................. 1467c Scale repeat interval
7/5 x 7/6 x 7/6 ...... 1116c
7/4 .................. 969c Septimal minor seventh / 7th harmonic
7/5 x 7/6 ............ 849c
7/5 .................. 583c Lesser septimal tritone
7/6 x 7/6 ............ 534c
7/6 .................. 267c Septimal minor third
1/1 .................. 0c Tonic

The loop station was set up to run 3 independent loops of differing lengths. The loop lengths were randomly chosen and in the region of 1 to 2 minutes each. The loops therefore constantly slide out of phase with each other and the notes endlessly reform into new configurations.

A guitar tuner with cents readout was permanently connected. Each note was individually recorded into the loop station after micro retuning the corresponding string by the necessary cents value.

The completed loops were left to run and were recorded into the digital multitracker.

The digital multitracker was used to create 7 delays, with the 7 delay times tuned to the frequencies of the 7 scale degrees. Finally I used the multitracker to add stereo reverb followed by stereo chorus, 7 times, each time tweaking the chorus rate, to create a shimmering, non-cyclic chorus and complex, organic reverb.

Mat Cooper.

Mat,

excellent technique and excellent result!!

It is really incredible how you are pushing the envelope with conventionally
fretted guitars.
