Valles Marineris in Carlos harmonic scale and pianoteq effects
This has been sitting around for a year and is still a WIP.

sorry for the duplicate - I imagine more than a few people are ignoring the other thread....

I've always liked this scale and have done some work with it. The triads are really nice and smooth and the lack of octaves makes it "interesting" to work with.

Nice piece there. I like the little gap and change at 3:43 - 3:46 or so. Much sounds like improvisation, and presumably that's the case, and what you intended.

I quite like this as well! Really interesting harmonic variety. How does it feel to play in this scale? Does it feel organic, or do you find yourself going for notes that aren't there? Do you feel any sort of "harmonic pull" toward a single harmonic center of gravity? Or do you feel a bit lost in terms of how to resolve chords?

Whenever I've tried JI, I've usually felt either totally lost in terms of how to resolve, or totally "stuck" with a given tonic that I can't escape.

Sounds pretty good. :-) Once of the first microtonal scales which I
created and made a song in was an x/16 scale as well...I must say they are
relatively easy to compose with and IMVHO one of the better "
straight harmonic series" sections to compose with, being high enough limit so
it gives the illusion you are switching roots and changing "tonal color" rather
than playing parts of a single chord (a problem I've noticed with composing with
the 7-14th partials harmonic series in comparison).

>"Do you feel any sort of "harmonic pull" toward a single harmonic center of

Amusing. It seems just looking at the scale there should be 4 or so strong
major triads, for example. And in listening there seems to be a good selection
of "roots" as well and it shows in the refreshing "constantly modulating" feel
of this piece.
The flip side is that any two notes much higher/lower than each other sound
more tense (typically an issue when you stack a straight harmonic series and get
lots of non-reduce-able fractions for dyads). In general, the scale and the
sound of the piece to me seem to imply an affinity-toward/stress-on chords that
span no more than an octave or so...and contains a lot of interesting
"predictable dissonances" where something sounds harsh but follow a confident
and organized pattern (along x/16....16th harmonic).

The overall effect of the scale in the song is dark but intelligent (as
opposed to dark and confused/panicked)...as is the composition style which
slowly morphs between creepy higher-limit chords and a few lower limit
ones...similar to blues quarter tones that resolve to major or minor.

Well, its been over a year since I performed this piece though I didn't feel
lost at all. No doubt I killed some bum notes though.

What if I gave you the score in some fashion? I'm thinking an animated
score video might be interesting.

Sounds good! I like the extended harmonies, and the stuff you're
getting from pianoteq here. -C.
