semicomma scale

Here is a sound file I created today:

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9234607

This is in 53-edo. It uses just 16 of the 53 pitch classes. These 16 are formed of two sets of 8, each being a stack of major thirds. These two stacks make a path to walk from a pitch to what would be a semicomma different if it were just-tuned, but the semicomma is tempered by 53-edo, so it's an enharmonic equivalence. That's the game I've been playing lately, to explore the ways that enharmonic equivalences in 53-edo make it different than just-tuning.

this sounds very interesting!

Is it possible to see a scala file - or something I can generate a scala
file from?

Thanks,

Chris

The stereo effect is really cool! Is that a comb filter?

In the group files, in the folder kukulaj, I have added sixteen.score - this is the CSound score file. It's probably easy to interpret, but just ask if something is unclear!

I don't know what scala does or how it works, so I don't know if this score file would be easy to convert.

I use just the simplest CSound orchestra & then some freeware MP3 compressor. I would love to learn more about CSound orchestra commands... but it looks like a lot of work to understand all that!

Dear Carl,

I enjoyed listening to this piece. I would love to use this set of pitches sometime soon, but don't have any of the microtonal software. Is there something you can send me that I can use on my computer to use this set of pitches in a piece.

Peace,

Mike

I use CSound. Here is their website:

http://www.csounds.com/

This is enormously powerful software. I just use the tiniest fraction of its power - it is very easy to get some basic microtonal pitches, and I use the first easy method I found. If you explore CSound at all, you will probably get better sounds that what I get!

I can't find a folder kukulaj. Is this possibly a subfolder?

What I see the folder list goes from ke to lo without a ku

Here is a URL to try:

/makemicromusic/files/kukulaj/

I'm not expert in all the buttons and switches... I hope this gets you to the right place!

Eeek! I was studying the score for "sixteen"; it turns out that only nine of the sixteen pitch classes got used! Studying the scale, it had a kind of gap in it.

So now I have created a new scale with seventeen pitch classes. It has three smaller stacks of major thirds. Here is a new sound file that uses it:

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9238837

Here is a picture of the new seventeen scale:

http://s140.photobucket.com/albums/r6/kukulaj/?action=viewB$t=key17.jpg

The shaded pitches are included in the scale. They form reasonably uniform stripes. This is how games with enharmonic equivalence are supported. The stripes in the scale of sixteen had a more pinched look which blocks the flow!

Here is yet another version:

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9240263

This is very close to "seventeen", but just less dissonant. I think it displays better the power of the scale.
