City of the Asleep "Early Microtonal Works" now available

Hi, List! I've compiled and re-released all my early microtonal guitar works (in 17-, 22-, and 31-tET as well as Catler 12-tone Ultra Plus JI) on my last.fm site
(http://www.last.fm/music/City+Of+The+Asleep/+albums)
and http://www.cityoftheasleep.com/music .
This comp contains loads of unreleased material, about ninety minutes of music, including 3 sort-of-pop 22-tone songs that were going to be part of an epic concept album, as well as some experimental JI stuff. There's also a little "microbiography" included, sort of a retrospective on my microtonal career thus far, if anyone's interested. It's kind of a big download, I admit, which is why I made all the individual tracks downloadable from the last.fm site (also because many of you probably already have half the tracks, which I released under the "Holocene" name originally).

Also, I've received word from Ron Sword that he's about done with my 20-EDO conversion, and once my finals are over I'm going to convert a guitar to 18-EDO using the "fishing line spiral-fret" method. I'm coming back with a vengeance, people!

AAAAAND I played my first solo show last night at an art gallery with my 17-tET acoustic guitar. I recorded it but I don't know how good the sound quality is yet. If it turns out to be any good, I'll make it available online.

Thanks for posting this Igliashon, I really like your stuff. Are you still
in Santa Cruz? If you're playing locally I'd really like to see your set.

Hi Cody,
I am no longer a resident of Santa Cruz. I have moved to Oakland to be closer to, well, everything. Once I get more comfortable with my set, I'll start hyping my shows more, but for now I'm keeping it low-profile. I'll post the next one on my website though (whenever that is).

Just sick. Ok, the quality of some of the tracks is of course a little less than MoaIL, but there's a lot of range to the music and it's very enjoyable. A marathon listen, even.

I listened to it twice today because I was unable to listen to it the past few days. That's right... I was sitting on this album for a couple of days unable to listen to it. It's like hell. Well, I enjoy it very much!

I like a couple of months or weeks to get used to an album but I can tell you the early favourites right now if ye find it interesting. I find "A Calamitous Simultaneity" very catchy. "Atheist Love Song" has a serious feel and mood which I love, and epic melodies. "The Ballade of Unplayed Notes" a down emotion, but it's nice to listen to. "Bunk Futter" - tasty. "The Poison" - nasty.

Your music is detailed so as I play City of the Asleep like a man obsessed, I'll eventually change my mind so that my favourite tracks are my worst tracks and my worst tracks are my favourite tracks.

Thanks for the tunes dear sir, you've done a good job. And I liked the microbio also.

Thanks, Sean! Your kind words are ALWAYS appreciated. I've been listening to "Golden Hour" more thoroughly and it really keeps opening up to me. It has definitely become my "gold standard" for microtonal music, one of the few examples of being ambitious AND successful, really obviously microtonal but still totally accessible: clear proof of what is really possible. I can only hope to reach that level! So your praise means a lot. Thanks!

You're one of my microtonal heroes, which is why I'm glad my album is still keeping you on your toes. :)

I don't think you should merely "hope" to reach whatever standard I've set - your musicianship and microtonal expertise outweigh mine. You'll do well! I have a feeling that when your latest stuff comes out, I'll have to work hard to keep up with you. It can only be a good thing.

Wow, for once an artist updates something years later and makes
it better. Maybe I've just been traumatized by George Lucas.
But I went back and listened to the original version of
Protagonism in Yellow (as opposed to Violet) and, boy, as much as
I liked it, I'm just going to delete those versions now.

THANK YOU for making this music available as nice, downloadable
albums.

By the way, saw Corpus Collosum play in Santa Clara last year right
around this time. You weren't there but they said they knew you.

Er, that is... I tried it twice and the server disconnected me
half way thru each time. Maybe I shouldn't try to dl both microtonal
albums at once?

I finally got to listen to Early Microtonal Works in 17-ET and 22-ET
by Igliashon. At certain moments I felt I was in a 10th Century palace
in Baghdad in a crazy Aladdin and the Magic Lamp story (good ol' 17!),
at other moments I thought I was at a live Van Halen concert in the
murky depths of Tartarus. The music is GOOD. very good. It's forceful,
mysterious, surreal, esoteric, provocative and LIVE. I thought "The
Ballade of Unplayed Notes" particularly reminded me of Paul Erlich's
"Decatonic Swing" accompanied by Ara Sarkissian. The other song names
are too wacky to mention.

And to think there are so many more CDs from where this one came
from... Stupefying.

Oz.
