Stirring the Lady

This is a smooth jazz piece built around Norm Harris' percussion using Garritan Jazz and Big Band sample set with the Aria player and a touch of tonehammer's Francesca sample set.

http://micro.soonlabel.com/just/JI/daily20100402-stirring-the-lady-in-e-JI.mp3

The tuning used is a JI set of intervals in 12 / octave setting that came with Aria. I find it works pretty well even with some of the bluesy things I do. That was surprising to me.

Scored for upright bass, piano, clarinet, saxophone and female vocalizations and of course Norm's percussion track.

Here is the tuning I used

! ji_12.scl
!
Basic JI with 7-limit tritone
12
!
16/15
9/8
6/5
5/4
4/3
7/5
3/2
8/5
5/3
9/5
15/8
2/1

I of course reserve the option of revising this piece :-)

A comparison via simultaneous playing of 12 equal and JI versions is here:

Good stuff. Love the collab. -C.

Thanks Carl for the listen and comment.

Out of curiosity did you listen to Bridgeport 2?

I'm curious because Stirring is obviously conservative for these parts while
Bridgeport 2 isn't.

I thought you might have missed it - I sent a link + info off list.

Judging from your past comments there is a chance you'll like it.
It is decidedly xenharmonic.

I don't know if you've been following the current discussion on tuning, but 7/5 is a septimal kleisma, 225/224, less than 45/32 which is how this note is tuned in the Ellis duodene. Tempering out 225/224 (marvel tempering) makes the two the same, and the same as a number of other scales, and turns it into a "marvelous dwarf", which has a complicated definition given here:

http://tonalsoft.com/gws/dwarf.htm

Choosing the nearest note in 72 equal is one way to do the tempering. It would be interesting to add that to your side-by-side comparisons.

This is very good! Another fine addition to my library.

Did I mention that the audience here really liked your 17-et Jazz
piece for the 60x60 Chris?

Oz.

Hi Oz,

Thanks again for the comment and listen. The JABB sample set is really nice.
I'm glad you liked it!

I don't remember your comment about the 17ET jazz - nonetheless thank you
for the audience's comment!

Chris
