Gene,

I can offer you some space on my server / websites. For permenance beyond me
soundcloud or internet archive ( http://www.archive.org/ ) are probably good
bets.

Hi Gene,

Check into www.nearlyfreespeech.net. They're a "pay for only what you use"
host. It's like $.01 per megabyte per month of storage, and $1.00 per
gigabyte of data transfer per month. Might be pretty cheap. I have a few
sites sitting there that I pay like $.02 a month for, because they aren't
doing much.

Not so good if you die and stop paying the bill. Archive.org
would be my pick.

I use them for my website. Yes, they're good, but the storage costs
start to be significant when you have a lot of music up. Still not
that expensive but not such an obviously good deal. It's a much
better option for a low-bandwidth theory-heavy site. (Problems I'm
having connecting, as in the other thread, are not at all their fault.
I just don't trust FTP, because I got hacked through it before, and I
don't have anything more secure set up yet.)

One advantage is that you can pour a load of money in and the site
keeps going. That's good if you can't be sure of your health. I lost
a site once after I went to China, and then to hospital, and missed
the annual payment. It's a danger with regular renewals.

That would be good. A permanent microtonal depository for everyone makes sense in the current state of data storage pricing.

I don't see a reason why archive.org wouldn't work. Short of a
nonprofit microtonal foundation with lots of money it seems like
the best tool for the job.

That is an excellent idea.

We would have to set up a foundation of some type and receive donations to
keep it afloat.

Yes, I can offer storage for now - but this is something that needs to be
bigger than me.

I am part of the "music module scene" and there is an archive of essentially
all modules have been stored and sorted in various ways.

http://modarchive.org/

Right now my hosting costs $180 a year for 1TB of storage with unlimited
traffic and unlimited most everything else. So this is doable for 10 people
donating $20 - or however you want to divide it.

Yes. You can upload any audio you own the rights to, and they'll
host it 'forever'. The first 17-tone piano concert was done this way
and it's still there after 4 years:

http://www.archive.org/details/seventeenTPP_01

I clicked on Jacob Barton and got a list of his uploads in record
time, sortable by all kinds of things like date, etc.

Googling for "17-tone piano concert" also brought up one of the
archive.org pages in the top 5 or so.

This is a completely useless post right now, but just to give a heads up:
I'm in the process of creating a microtonal/theory site now. It isn't up
yet, but should be soon. When it is, I'll be happy to host EVERYONE's stuff
for free. I don't think that any kind of storage space cap will be necessary
once I get hosting worked out.

If you guys can find a workable solution for the next month or so, I'll
offer to take care of it from that point on. Again, a completely useless
post until the site is up, but here's a preemptive notice until then.

Sounds great, but I don't see what it has to do with
Gene's request. We're talking about storage that can
outlive individuals. In business, this is called the
hit-by-a-bus number.

The discussion is about a permanent microtonal repository, since
hosting is so expensive these days. I'm alerting you guys to the fact
that I'll be offering one for free soon. In fact, I'll be paying for
it.

A nonprofit org offering to host anyone's content in perpetuity
without ads imposes a 10 MB file limit? What tightwads!

At an avg bitrate of 256Kbps (effectively lossless mp3) that's
about 5m12s of music. So I can see that it might be a problem.
The baseline should be encoding Tales From Topographic Oceans
in four files. That would be a 50MB limit as a round number.
Then if anyone complained they could just say, hey, this stuff
isn't half as good as Topographic Oceans, why should it be longer?

I'll send this along to them.

You're setting up a trust then? What will the endowment be?

You said "permanent" yourself. A "while" is not permanent.

It's the number of people that have to be hit by a bus to
stop the effort. If Gene wanted a bus number of 1, I could
host his stuff, or Chris. In fact I did offer to do that
months ago, but he never sent me the files.
