Re: Why I am on too many tuning lists...

Hello all,

I've just signed on to this list, like I'm not on enough tuning lists
already :-). Every now and then, I have to wonder why I subscribe to ALL of
these lists, what with high bandwidth and little time. Last night I had the
sort of experience that makes sifting through the emails all worthwhile.

Through the tuning list, I'd met overtone singer Jim Cole, whose cassette I
already had acquired a number of years ago. We'd corresponded offlist a few
times, and planned a visit when he was going to be on vacation here in New
Hampshire where I live.

Last night we met up in person for the first time at the park next to the
music store where I teach, we talked for a while and watched the almost full
moon rise over the river. When it got buggy, we went inside the store with
our instruments. We tuned up and improvised together for a while, Jim
playing his backpacker tanpura and singing, and me with my recently acquired
fretless acoustic guitar. Magical MicroMusicMaking at its absolute best!

This is the truly wonderful thing about the internet, and on lists such as
these, to be able to find and build a community of artists and friends with
similar interests all over the world. Here's to much more micromusicmaking
with new friends!

It's Seth!

Seth, it is great to have you. Your particular combination of skills and experiences will really deepen the mix.

...and the rest of the story - what a great set of possibilities the new mediums raise, and it is really nice you could share that 'collaboration' with us! I'd look forward to a Austen/Cole group effort.

As for collaboration, I know Seth will appreciate this: while I'm typing this reply, Mark O'Connor is out in the living room, rehearsing with my wife and two other string players. And I don't have to play any notes, I can just listen...

Cheers,
Jon

Exactly my opinion too, Seth! Thanks to the tuning lists, I'm going
to be meeting Manuel Op de Coul, Graham Breed, and Robert Walker
while I'm in Europe. Graham and Robert are coming over from England
specifically for this meeting! And the four of us will be banging
our heads together to try and integrate our own respective software
applications into the one great program all the microtonalists want!

Hi Jacky,

Oh yes, this seems like THE virtual tuning place to be.

I wish you were there too. We've got to figure out a way to get together in
person, and play! Maybe we all ought to plan an east coast microtonality
festival/event/gathering (not to exclude our west coast and other continent
friends).

Us too! We're only a few states away in New England, so...

Mmmmmmm, nice. Do say hi to Mark for me sometime, I met him many years ago
at the National Guitar Workshop in CT, not that he'd remember meeting me
among 200 people that weekend.

Seth,

i'm currently (due to medication i'm sure, i hope) in-continent.

Another guy on another WACKO list is also in-continent, but orally.

Nevertheless, thanks for thinking of us left-coasters. Regardless of
constitution.

Oh now I understand why you want me to come to Europe. You guys need
a venture capitalist.

All kidding aside I hope you do jumpstart the MicroSoft of
microtuning!

Peace and Psi,
Mary

(And now I await where GZ's fertile brain runs with this story of
the New Millenium. Its not about waiting around in truckstops with
clean rest rooms anymore - its all about venture capital and stock
options :-))

Well... without speaking for the others, I'll readily admit that
*I* need a venture capitalist! Will you come to my rescue? :)

Except that our program won't crash every day, and we won't
steal the main idea from another company who perfected it first.

Actually, I've been afraid for a long time that *my* software
project would be the Apple that gets bitten by some big Microtonalsoft.

(For those who don't know, and since the subject of rap has come up...
I'm making a really cute pun here: "bite" is rap-slang for infringement
of copyright.)
