17 ET Jazz

17 ET Jazz

This is a hybrid performance / scored microtonal piece using Kontakt 3, pianoteq, sonar 8.5, and a Korg MS2000 as a midi controller.

Kontakt contributes drums, upright bass, sax section, and trumpet.

Pianoteq 2.3 contributes the jazz piano.

The drums were scored first, bass second and then other instruments played along with that. The goal was to keep the composition to 60 seconds or less since this is a submission to the Chicago 60×60 event (not selected at this time).

The main motive is a 17 ET analog to a suspended 4th to major 3rd in common practice 12 edo tuning.

Excellent Chris! The best I've heard from you so far and the
best 60x60 submission I've heard so far (I've only heard a few).

Does it have a title? Or just "4001-1 ver 2"?

I'm calling it 17ET Jazz

didn't feel a snazzy title this time.

Thanks for the listen and comment! I'm glad you liked it!

Nice! I like the sound of the harmonies in the sax section.

I rather liked the finish. Thought it wrapped up really nicely
to the 60s mark.

>O Carl,

>Have you perchance listened to my very own East Dreams West?

I have. I must have liked it because it's here in my files.
I listened again just now, and I do like it. It's very effective
in the tuning, but it still sounds more like it was sourced
from 12 than Chris' piece. It also has too much reverb.
Chris' piece is not a masterwork or anything, but he found a
cute little thing in 17 and effectively presented it in 60s.

Chris,
Nice work! Great showcase for 17 EDO. It has a nice falling down a hill feeling, as the descending changes go not quite as far as they would with 12 EDO, leaving a real sense of unease. Nicely answered by going back up the same distance.
