Icicle Caverns: My first study in 11-tone equal temperament

🔗Ozan Yarman <ozanyarman@...>

Hello everyone,

I present my first musical work in 11-tone equal temperament: "Icicle
Caverns". It is a chilly, electronic ambiance music exceeding 5
minutes with intense orchestral elements including a 4-part canon at the mid section.

All the sounds are tuned to the tones of 11 equal division of the
octave by a special microtonal soundfont synthesizer called SCORDATURA
by H-Pi Instruments. Audio stream was captured into Logic Pro via Jack
Audio. Effects were added by me in Logic.

You can download the score from the same link. If the flash player
doesn't work for you, try:

Inspiration for this music came to me when Istanbul was covered with
snow a few days back. It could be an ambiant theme music for a
computer role-playing game in an ice world perhaps? Comments welcome!

Cordially,
Dr. Ozan Yarman

Hello Ozan,

I am impressed with your work! I especially love the 4-part canon. That part alone could certainly be in a computer role-playing game. This piece reminds me of some music which got me into microtones in the beginning.

Keep making music! ;)

Sean

Dear Sean, thanks! The canon consumed too much of my time, as I had
had to familiarize myself with the weird way transpositions and
counterpoint work in 11-equal. I don't recommend any of what I have
been going through!

I'm planning on releasing an album when I have created enough
material. Any tips and pointers for a novice such as myself? :)

Cordially,
Oz.

Tips and pointers... It's a hard thing to say! I believe I read that you were going to create an album on CD. Please note I've only released digitally online, free for all listeners, so the distribution method will be different between us.

I'll focus on promotion, and getting people to discover your music. I promote completely DIY, grassroots, by sending notices wherever I can, and speaking to people who can share my music to more people.

When posting notices on the web to announce your new music, do it in a shotgun fashion (send the message to many many places, websites, and groups within websites). There are countless people waiting to hear something new.

Use sites like last.fm to find people who are listening to you, and form a relationship with fans so they know about future works and stay keen. last.fm is actually a good website in general and it's worth creating a profile for yourself there.

Find people who are enthusiastic about your work. You'll spend a lot of time sharing news of your music to various people - but each enthusiastic fan will help you by sharing your music with their contacts too.

Forget myspace. It's full of spam, the company is out to make money off your work, and rarely do people find success there.

Find people who can get you heard more. The other day I sent an email to a guy who has a radio show on brap.fm. He loved Golden Hour and played a track on the show a few days ago. Actually, he was so keen he even mentioned the microtonality - so I think it's great to approach people personally to share what you're doing!

There are many music blogs, websites and podcasts which discuss new music, so send them all demos and give them the chance to share your work to their readers/listeners.

There are quite a lot of places where people can stumble upon your music... the hard part is finding them all, and making sure you're visible! Put yourself on the market!

Personally, when I've just released something, I will spend about an hour a day promoting across the web. I'll do this for a few weeks when I know that people have been listening to it.

If you're selling a CD, it may be more difficult to get people to make the purchase - so consider putting a couple of full tracks on your website for free download so that people can have a preview of the CD. It also lets pepole become familiar with your tunes, as they can put it on their music player, share with friends etc. Hopefully then they'll go and buy the rest of the album.

Naturally I'm not going to give you any tips as a musician - you're ready to do anything! :)

There's a lot more to be said on the subject of releasing music, and I'm not an expert but I'll happy to share more ideas. Likewise please share any good ideas you have!

Good luck,

Sean

If needed my cousin does music mastering professionally.
He has a degree in Audio Engineering.
About $40 to $60 a song depending on difficulty.

Ah, thank you Marcus! I understand that not everyone had the chance to
listen to Icicle Caverns when announced more than a month ago. Still
happy to hear good comments!

Have you checked out a re-make of my Creepy Critter for piano and
clarinet at my website? It's not exactly microtonal, though re-tuned
in Logic Pro to some well-temperament.

Cordially,
Oz.

I don't like Creepy Critter, but I like East Dreams West, Saba Storm,
and Super Trance.
